長骨的大部分由緻密骨組成，中間的骨髓腔有許多海綿骨和骨髓。 大部分的四肢骨都是長骨（包括指骨與趾骨），一些例外包括膝蓋骨（臏骨）、腕骨、跗骨和構成腕關節和踝關節的骨骼。 長骨的分類取決於形狀而不是大小。

骨頭的構造:海綿骨(Spongy bone) 海綿骨呈不規則的條狀，組織間有空隙，可減輕骨頭重量也以容納髓的造血組織，所以與皮質骨相比海綿的血液供給佳，受傷較易癒合，以骨小樑（ Trabeculae）形成內部網狀結構

Capitulum 骨端；小頭 A small head shaped eminence or rounded articular surface of a bone Condyle 骨節,髁 A smooth, rounded eminence covered with articular cartilage. Crest 冠,頂部, 嵴 A sharp upstanding ridge or mark Diaphysis 骨幹 A shaft or part between the two ends of a long bone Epicondyle 上髁 A prominence or projection located above an area covered with articular cartilage.
