MODS 的概述 MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema) 後設資料物件描述 綱要：針對MARC及DC缺點發展而成，是一套包含資料查詢 、檢 索、管理等多重功能的數位化物件描述標準 2002.06 美國國會圖書館網路發展部和MARC標準辦公室所發展 由 MARC 衍生的描述性後設資料，主要是為了圖書館的應用， 但亦適用至其他的資源描述 採用 XML 語法 使用Unicode，可容納不同語言的文字及符號 提供使用標籤及符號語法和規則，允許開發者自己定義標籤 涵蓋 MARC書目紀錄，並應用於數位資源的編目 5

ＭODS 產生背景 MARC 21 限制 Dublin Core 的問題 體系龐大，字段重複，修訂複雜 書目資料納入不同欄位，關係的呈現是隱性的 ISO 2709的語法結構不夠清楚，影響資料的交換與互通 不適合處理動態數位資訊的描述 無法直接在Web上瀏覽著錄結果 MARCXML 只是MARC的XML化，建置方式複雜且嚴謹，大 量電子資源著錄成本高且速度慢 Dublin Core 的問題 可直接著錄數位與網路資源，是後設資料的交換與內部處理格式，但規則簡單而紀錄連結極為薄弱 非針對專業館員設計，紀錄不完整，造成發展與應用上的缺失 6

MODS status 目前版本為 MODS 3.3 版 Registered by National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Companion to authority metadata (MADS) in version 1.0

MODS 功能 可作為Z39.50 的特定格式 可作為 METS (後設資料編碼與傳輸標準)的延伸標準 可作為 Data Mining 資料探勘的後設資料 以 XML 語法進行原始資源描述 以 XML 語法表達簡略的MARC紀錄 將使用XML 語法的後設資料重新封裝為一個電子資源

MODS 特色 承襲 MARC21相同的資料語意 將 MARC中的部分元素重新群組 ,有數個資料元素可被併合 http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/

MADS 應用 IVRLA (Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive) Project, University College Dublin 此計畫是UCD在2005年1月開始規劃 ，擬數位化重要的典藏 ，以提供保存與便捷的檢索 ；其間配合MODS規範，選用 MADS 訂定二種權威檔： 1. The Name Authority File 人名權威檔 contains personal, corporate or conference names 2. The Places Authority File 地名權威檔 contains geographic place names http://www.ucd.ie/ivrla/ Project Workbook

結語 MODS 可以將圖書館龐大的書目資源導入，並與其他原始電子資源做整合，而以METS (後設資料編碼與傳輸標準) 來作為數位資源的交換、傳播與存取之架構，未來我們在進行數位化計畫中可以考慮應用， 而國外的相關應用實例經驗非常值得作我們的借鏡。
