Did you know… 點diăn:order on the spot, ex. 點菜、點歌、點名…= call the roll 叫jiào is used as “to order” here, which is similar to點 叫太多=order too much. 喝hē =drink, ex. 喝湯 Chinese people say drink soup instead of eating soup. 要yào=want, 我要… is more straight forward than 我想要… (I would like to have…). The later one is considered to be more polite in some situations because it’s less demanding. Measure words: When counting objects, a measure word is always used, although different objects have different measure words. For example: 一碗湯=a bowl of soup, 一杯水=a glass of water, 一杯茶=a cup of tea, 兩雙筷子= two pairs of chopsticks, 一盤魚=a plate of fish. 碗、雙、杯、盤are all used as measure words.
