Sonnet 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate:    Rough winds do shake the darling buds of  May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed, And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed: But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st, Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st, So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Shakespeare

Notes: thee: you thou: you art: are hath: has sometime: sometimes complexion: face fair: beauty thy: your eternal: ever-lasting ow’st: own wand’rest: wander, walk about grow’st: grow

If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind? Shelley (1792-18 Ode to the West Wind Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is: What if my leaves are falling like its own! The tumult of thy mighty harmonies Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone, Sweet though in sadness.Be thou,Spirit fierce, My spirit! Be thou me, impetuous one! Drive my dead thoughts over the universe Like wither'd leaves to quicken a new birth! And, by the incantation of this verse, Scatter, as from an unextinguish'd hearth Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind! Be through my lips to unawaken'd earth The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind, If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

Notes: 1. lyre: 一种乐器 2. its own: 指森林里的落叶 3. tumult: 喧嚣,吼叫; 4 harmonies: 和声 5. both: 指我和森林 6.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; The Road Not Taken Robert Frost Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, --to be continued

--continued And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I marked the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. The Road Not Taken Robert Frost I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Special skills in understanding the meaning. 1. A sentence may cover several lines of a poem, so when you read it, try to find out the complete sentence. eg The tumult of thy mighty harmonies Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone, Sweet though in sadness. 2. Inverted order and ellipsis are often used in poems. eg Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, =Sometime the eye of heaven shines too hot, 3. Imagination is needed in understanding and appreciating poems.

Challenge: lines of the poem you read. Translate the first four or five lines of the poem you read.
