Alberta's per capita GDP - at over $36,000 is 20% higher than second place Ontario's and the Canadian average. In 1999 the growth rate was 2.5% and experts predict Alberta to be among the nation’s leaders in the future, with real growth to exceed 4% in 2000. Alberta’s manufacturers are thriving. Although the industry’s shipments decreased 4 percent in 1998 to $ 32.9 Billion, this was the result of lower commodity prices for refined petroleum products, petro-chemicals and primary metals . The province consistently has the highest investment per capita among provinces. A total of $31.3 billion was invested in 1999, by far the highest per capital level of investment of any province in Canada. That figure is expected to reach $32.4 billion in 2000. Alberta’s strong economy has translated into a healthy job market with 38,000 new jobs created in 1999, and more than 258,000 in the past 6 years (since 1993).
