我想要「略過」而非「錯過」文獻 圖書館的需求: 滿足使用者可以從單一工具展開其研究過程 檢索廣泛資源而無重複 同時包含期刊文獻、圖書館資源及網路資源 連結到所有訂購的全文 單純的使用者介面 Start by explaining the whole changing environment which led to the need for Scopus: (USERS’ NEEDS) - Increasing amounts of information becoming available (either published in peer-reviewed literature or, more and more so, on the web) - The “next generation” of users being Google-addicts - Older generations of academic faculty know that not all scholarly information can be found via web search engines, but frustrated by having to search through many different (often duplicate) resources - Time pressure: users have a need to quickly review information available to them and decide on its relevance (LIBRARY NEEDS) - Librarians frustrated by the Google trend, but ‘brick’ libraries giving way to ‘click’ libraries means that they have less and less contact with their users - Users are no longer expert searchers; many do not use A&I controlled vocabularies. Librarians know this is not an efficient way of searching, but don’t have the resources or the face-time anymore to train users in expert searching - With increasing budget pressures, librarians need to be able to justify their investments in full-text resources. To do this, they need them to be visible and used; hence, a need for more disclosure of entitled full text All of this led to the need for Scopus – these quotes from users and librarians (all recent, and all found on various listservs and webblogs, etc., as well as from our own research) illustrate the point.

The first thing we had to do (and continue to do) was ensure Scopus covered everything they needed: - this meant Scopus had to be inter-disciplinary, the demand for an all-science platform was increasing - Scopus needed to include a range of content types – peer-reviewed articles of course but also open access journals and other content types such as conference proceedings and Web content. We continue to include what researchers demand by ensuring subject librarians and top scientists prioritise our new additions in a Content Selection Committee (in the process of being formed).

- For IP-independent access, there is a marketing homepage that appears with the login bar, which does not show the register link. - For IP-dependant access, it is NOT necessary to login unless using the personalisation features. Scopus will prompt for a login when required. - Registration is a one time process, but note that a ScienceDirect username/password will be recognised by Scopus and vice versa.

Located just above the results list, this feature provides an overview of all results according to source title, author name, year, document type and subject area: - Each aspect can be expanded by clicking on More… or contracted again with Less… - Results may be limited to selected articles (limit to) - Articles may be excluded from the results list (exclude) - The newly displayed results are ranked according to frequency (highest to lowest) Refine results can prove very helpful when beginning research on a new topic. Users can get a quick overview of: - Relevant journals publishing articles on their topic of interest - Influential authors working in this area - Highly-cited articles influencing future research

Scopus supports this process and allows users to export up to 1,000 cited references at one time. Citations may be exported in RIS or ASCII format and may be imported into various reference management applications (RefWorks, EndNote, Reference Manager and ProCite). Users may choose from two formats: 1. Citations Only – exports the following: Author(s), Article Title, Publication Year, Journal Title and Volume, Issue, Page Range 2. Show how to save a list and retrieve it (only available with personal login)

CrossRef titles plus 2000 non-CrossRef titles (使用授權連結) Via library’s local linking resolver (SFX, LinkFinderPlus) The ‘view at publisher’ button is a pre-resolved link. It links to the full text of a document at the publisher’s site. You won’t know whether you have access until you’ve clicked on the link to see if your library has a subscription Entitled full text linking means that you will only see a link to the full text of an article or document IF you are entitled. This way you’re not wasting time following links you’re not sure about. This button is called ‘full text’ and when you click on this button, you will go directly to the full-text of the article, based on your library’s subscription

A single search delivers results displayed in four tabs. When a search is performed on Scopus, the Web is simultaneously searched via Scirus. Patent results are available via Scirus from a separate tab on the results page. Scirus has indexed patents from USPTO, (United States Patent and Trademark office), EPO (European Patent Office), WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) and JPO (Japanese Patent Office). All these patents are selected on the criteria of being scientific and/or being of interest for scientific users. Scirus indexes the abstracts, full text (when available), title, authors and assignee, affiliations, patent number as well as the first published date. DEMONSTRATION or HANDS-ON: 1.
