The 3 companies had correctly anticipated that this would drive significant market competition for high quality and low prices, giving the consumer of LTO very good price / value. As is necessary for consumer confidence, the consortium proposed a four generation roadmap of LTO capacities and performance ranges. To insure impartial validation of interchange of data written on various brands of tape cartridges and tape drives, the consortium engaged a third party testing agency to verify that product would be manufactured within the strict guidelines of the LTO format specification. Every tape media and hardware manufacturer that wants to bear the LTO Ultrium logo on products that it sells into the marketplace MUST first submit their written tape cartridges to the 3rd party testing agency for compliance certification. Once certified, that manufacturer is allow to use LTO Ultrium logo in packaging and marketing its version of LTO tape drives or tape media. The LTO consortium also functions as a licensing organization to any other company in the world that wants to license LTO technology. To date, the LTO consortium has sold over 30 licenses to companies interested in manufacturing either LTO Ultrium tape drives or tape media. To date, 6 tape media manufacturers have passed compliance testing with the independent test organization. The 3 original LTO consortium members have also passed compliance testing and have therefore been certified to manufacture tape drive hardware bearing the LTO Ultrium logo. Due in large part to the fact that it is standards-based and therefore interchangeable among many large, reputable tape companies, the marketplace has driven sales of LTO Ultrium media and hardware to far exceed to revenue and unit sales of the incumbent midrange tape technology “high capacity” analog to LTO, Super DLT. Since 2003, LTO has out-shipped Super DLT on the order of better than 2:1, according to leading industry analysts IDC and Freeman reports. For IBM alone, at the close of the first half of 2004, IBM had cumulatively shipped over 300,000 LTO drives, standalone, OEM and in over 15,000 automated tape library configurations.

The collaboration of consortium companies does not reach beyond the boundaries of developing this format specification. In fact, there are legally binding federal guidelines with the United States (where all 3 companies are incorporated) that restrict further collaboration. Strategically, this means that individual consortium companies independently develop their own sets of (hopefully) unique features and functions which centralize around the format specification. It is these aspects of a particular “brand” of LTO Ultrium tape drive or media that allows a manufacturer to differentiate itself from the other LTO competition in the marketplace. Lastly, on this slide, we should further emphasize that compliance testing by the independent 3rd party measures only the adherence to the format specification and is not meant to imply anything about a particular brand or company with respect to product quality or reliability.

Of course, IBM, with it’s near 50 years of tape experience (at the time the consortium was founded) had a lot of experience to share. IBM’s experience with cartridge-based tape media dates back to 1985 when it introduced the world’s first cartridges-based tape format, called Over the next 20 years, IBM went on to improve upon the design of its 3480 tape cartridge, incrementally increasing capacity and read / write performance of the tape drives so that when the consortium was formed, IBM was able to bring significant customer field experience to the consortium in developing the new cartridge-based format called LTO Ultrium. In fact, by far, IBM had the most experience of the 3 hardware manufactures in development of cartridge based tape being sold into the midrange and enterprise marketplace. As mentioned previously, IBM had brought concepts from several pieces of key, patented, technology to be incorporated into the Ultrium format standard. Namely, timing-based servo tracking which allows data to be located on tape with a higher degree of accuracy than track following servo techniques. In generation 2 LTO, IBM introduced partial response maximum likelihood encoding to improve the data storage capacity per meter or overall density of the data on tape.

This the decision not to offer an HVD model was based on the facts that 1)HVD demand has been declining for several quarters and 2) HVD SCSI buses are limited to a data rate of 40MB/s maximum. This occurs regardless of data compressibility and will cause the generation 3 drive to most likely be underutilized in terms of backup and restore performance ability. In the majority of countries around the world, IBM warrants the product for 3 years. Just like the predecessor generation 2 product, the entire unit is completely replaceable a a whole, via mail-in exchange after problem determination is performed by the customer or ce WORKING IN CONJUNCTION WITH BM technical support. In Japan and several other AP countries, the local country management has defined warranty replacement via IBM onsite exchange for a period of 1 year .Please consult the product announcement itself for specific details on warranty terms by country. These advancements were introduced in generation 1 of LTO in the fall of 2000 and continue today in the latest generation of IBM LTO. Further, since generation 1, IBM has been the only LTO drive manufacturer to offer a native fibre channel interface, which improves ease of use connectivity and data throughput in Fibre channel based SANs. IBM’s MR flat lapped head helps reduce tape wear by decreasing the tape to tape contact found in typical tape drives. Traditional tape heads wrap the tape around the head at a fairly substantial angle (called the wrap angle), bringing more of the tape’s surface in contact with the tape head. This, in combination with the improved tape path guiding (called surface control guiding) help to stabilize the lateral movement of tape across the head, reducing the amount of re-reads or writes that might occur if the tape path weren’t so stable. Surface control guiding is accomplished via two set of guiding rollers on either side of the tape head. The two inner most rollers are actually grooved, which causes air to “bleed-out” from underneath the surface of the tape, allow more precise guiding of the tape via the surface of the tape across the tape head.

LAN attached servers are connected over Ethernet to the backup server which in turn is connected to the tape drive over fibre channel. A client on the LAN attached server is used to initiate this dataflow, and the backup application on the backup server completes the process by writing the data out to tape. Scheduling can be controlled by the LAN attached server or the backup server, but the important point to note is that the network is typically a bottleneck. For this reason many backup applications introduced the concept of a disk pool where the data can be stored temporarily before it is spooled off to tape but this approach has its drawbacks. Firstly it requires additional management to set up the disk pool and monitor it on an ongoing basis. Secondly, the disk pool may have to share the disk with other application data which could, depending on the throughput requirements of the other applications, may impact either the backup or the application I/O performance, or both. Lastly, the data needs to flow through the system twice: once to the disk pool, and then again to the attached tape. This is not an exhaustive comparison between a disk pool and a virtual tape solution, but in general, our customer want a simpler solution. The lower diagram illustrates an alternative SAN solution. In this solution the application server writes the data directly out to a tape drive and circumvents the LAN bottlenecks, but this may require additional software to manage and also may prove to be too costly to implement for all but a select set of application servers that warrant this approach. For this reason we have seen additional options emerge over the last few years including NDMP and iSCSI which are beyond the scope of this presentation but optional features on the TS7520 Virtualization Engine. So now let’s take a critical look at tape processing to determine its characteristics and factors that may influence its useability. Page 57 57

ITSM was designed with all these in mind. Other products have nothing more than “shrink-wrap” integration, or have been modified to incorporate disaster recovery as “an afterthought”. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager - Enabling Technologies Note Strength of Database: ================================================================== Database The specially designed IBM Tivoli Storage Manager database retains information about all client system & user files, business policies, disaster recovery information, & the scheduling of client & administrative tasks. The information retained in this database is called metadata, which means data that describes data. The flexibility of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager’s database allows customers to define Storage Management policies around business needs for individual clients or groups of clients. Client data attributes such as storage destination, number of versions, & retention period can be assigned at the individual file level & stored in the database. The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager database also ensures reliable Storage Management processes. To maintain data integrity, the database utilizes a recovery log to roll back any changes made if a storage transaction is interrupted before it completes. This is known as a two-phase commit. Also, both the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager database & recovery log can be mirrored for availability, providing automatic volume switching after a media failure. In the unlikely event of a IBM Tivoli Storage Manager database recovery, operators can restore the database to the exact point of a failure by rolling the recovery log forward after restoring from the latest database backup. Full+Incremental This a very traditional backup paradigm. You take a full backup on the weekend & then take an incremental backup of what has changed on each day of the week. This would traditionally produce 5-6 individual set of tapes to accomplish. To do a restore, you would find & restore the initial full backup & then find/restore/apply each individual incremental tape, in sequential order, up to the date where you had the corruption/failure - which takes the maximum amount of time. (Ask the audience - Who uses this approach? Where was this paradigm created?…what environment did it come from?) The answer is from the mainframe environment years ago, you had a single system with data on it….most likely not 7 x 24 operations, nothing on-line etc…but you had to protect the data in case of corruption/disaster - so this approach was created. Full+Differential Some time passed & someone realized that their operations were becoming more critical, data volumes were increasing etc & they created another backup paradigm. This is also a very traditional backup paradigm. You take a full backup on the weekend & then take what is called a differential backup of what has changed since the last full backup taken on the weekend. This would traditionally produce many individual set of tapes to accomplish as well, but it was faster for recovery, because you would find/restore the last full backup & then find/apply only the latest differential set of tapes for recovery. (Ask the audience - Who uses this approach? Where was this paradigm created?…what environment did it come from?) The answer is again from the mainframe environment…but people are beginning to realize that it is not necessarily how fast you can backup, but how quickly can you recover - so this approach was created. All other solutions out there that compete with ITSM use one or both or some permutation of one or both of these old backup methods. In fact ITSM will allow you to use these as well….but there is a better/faster/more efficient way! Does anyone see what is happening over & over again to the data being backed up - over a network, that does not need to be done? (Pause for an answer) You are backing up the same data, that has changed only once - over & over & over again!!! IBM Tivoli Progressive Incremental This is the new & unique IBM Tivoli Storage Manager paradigm - no one else can do it this way….let me explain how this works. You could call this progressive incremental (its official name), you could call it a rolling full, you could call it incremental forever or All incremental plus reclamation & collocation - a real mouthful! (Speaker: You will need to explain how this operates in you own words - after you have read the Ron Riffe Vision paper. It is usually done by following this sequence: - Take initial full backup at the file level…stored in storage pools, updating ITSM database. - Then only changed file are taken….stored in storage pools, updating the ITSM database as to what is the most current version of a particular file. - This process goes on FOREVER - no more full backups again! - Explain tape reclamation & collocation procedures. Benefits: - Only takes minimum amount of data - one time. Less resource need at ITSM client, less network bandwidth used, less resource at ITSM server used. - ITSM DB keeps track of every file on every tape - faster recovery of only the files needed to recovery vs. an entire full & all subsequent changed file versions.) Notes from Best Practice paper on Progressive Backup: Progressive Backup Methodology The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager architecture uses an intelligent backup method that provides efficiencies during both the backup & restore of client data. During the initial client backup, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backs up all eligible files, creating a full backup. Subsequently, files are only backed up again if they are new or have changed since the last backup. There is never a need for another full backup to consolidate the files into a single image, because IBM Tivoli Storage Manager maintains a pointer in its database to the latest version of each file for each client. Other backup products require an initial full backup, followed by regular incremental or differential backups (usually once a day), & then additional periodic full backups (usually once a week). This less efficient backup method results in redundant weekly full backups of files that haven’t changed, wasting both network & media resources. Such products also require a multi-step restore process that requires restoration of the last full backup along with more recent incremental or differential backups in order to recover the latest version of a file or an entire system. Collocation & Reclamation Both the collocation & reclamation features are powered by the intelligence of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager database. Collocation consolidates all data belonging to a particular client onto the same tape or group of tapes. Thus, even though a client may perform progressive backups over a long period of time, the number of tapes used by a given client still remains small. Reclamation is the process by which the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server monitors the utilization of tapes in its inventory. As backup versions expire, the amount of free space on tape volumes is tracked. When the amount of free space reaches a customer-defined threshold, the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server automatically mounts that tape & moves the remaining data to another eligible tape, consolidating & decrementing data stored on the tape. The combination of collocation & reclamation enhances the efficiency & speed of client data recovery, because the client data can be restored from the smallest number of tapes possible. In addition to the unique architectural features described above, there are other exclusive functions of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager base product that differentiate it from its competitors. You may ask why is the selection & use of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager growing so rapidly. Further Notes on Storage Best Practices: Best Practices for Storage Management Enterprises that recognize the high priority & potential return on investment of a well-developed Storage Management strategy commonly develop a series of best practices. Such practices typically improve IT efficiency & effectiveness, while improving system availability to users. Best practices for Storage Management include: Using a central database of files under Storage Management, which enables central monitoring & control & reduces the amount of data stored. Backing up only changed data, which improves backup time, reduces network demands, & saves on storage resources. Relocating backup tapes for off-site storage to support disaster recovery efforts. The storage manager should provide a tape “pull” list, as well as a directory of the tape contents. Allowing end-users as well as LAN administrators to perform restores. Since most restores are due to end-users accidentally deleting files, empowering end users to restore only their own files saves IT time & effort. Automatically restarting restore operations in case of network failure during a restore operation. Implementing a Storage Management policy as needed, across heterogeneous platforms. Archiving data using a centrally managed archival/retrieval system, so that end-users & applications benefit from robust records retention services without the overhead of direct management of these activities. Let’s now talk about the first major component/function of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager - Backup & Restore. As I mentioned earlier, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager brings to the market a new & unique backup paradigm….let’s focus on this one word for now & come back to this chart later - the word is Incremental.
