专利申请人为了有效地保护其发明创造，在专利文献中往往会用一些繁复晦涩、意义含混的专用术语（或法律术语），与一般科技论文中的通用技术用词不同 由于专利审查制度程序的规定，以及专利的保护具有国家性，常常造成相同技术文献多次重复出版（专利家族） 一般由专利审核机构所提供的免费的专利检索系统基本只提供了简单的检索途径，由于专利文献的特殊性，基本上检索是挂一漏万；一般只提供本机构或少数几个机构所审核的专利信息，而且专利全文也多以单页显示的图形文件(IMAGE)方式提供

Manual codes are arranged in hierarchies where there is a broad or general code at the top of the hierarchy followed by subdivisions of the codes into more and more specific categories. For example, the manual code J07 is defined as "Refrigeration; ice; gas liquefaction/solidification."
