8 專利的基本特性 國家專利主管機關授予申請人在一定時間内享有不准他人任意製造、使用或銷售其專利產品或者使用其專利方法的權利。作為獲得這種專利權利的前提，權利申請人必須要以專利（申請）說明書的形式公開自己所申請專利的技術内容及細節。 專利的基本特點： 進步性 新穎性 實用性

9 專利（申請）說明書作為專利授予（申請）的重要文獻組成部分，具有不同於其他文獻類型的特點：
內容新穎、報導迅速 由於專利制度中特有的優先權原則，發明人往往會在發明完成的第一時間裏提出專利申請。因此90-95%的發明創造會很快地先出現在專利文獻中，所以專利文獻是追蹤技術創新領域最新進展的一個重要媒介。 - 電視機：1929年發表於專利文獻中，到了1948才在期刊中有所反映，其間相隔了近20年。 - 80% 的專利資訊從未或不再以其他形式（論文、會議等）發表。

15 描述性的標題與摘要 專利文獻所具有的法律性質，以及專利申請人為了有效地保護其發明創造，在專利文獻中往往一些繁複晦澀、意義含混的專用術語（或法律術語），與一般科技論文中的通用技術用詞不同，因此用習慣的常用詞檢索時，很難找到相關的技術專利文獻，了解某項技術的全貌 Derwent的技術專家會用通俗的語言按照技術人員平常用詞、行文的習慣重新用英文書寫每一篇文獻的標題和摘要，重新書寫的標題、摘要會從以下幾個方面對專利加以描述，即使用習慣的常用詞進行檢索，也不會有問題

許多專利發明人在提交專利申請說明書時，會列出自己發明過程中所參考過的論文及專利；同時有的專利授與機構的專利審查員也會列出自己審查某一項專利授與權過程中所參考過的文獻及專利。DII中透過連結，顯示這些有關某一專利的參考文獻及參考專利情況(來自於發明者和專利審查員的) 同時，DII中還會有Citing Patent的連結，顯示某一項專利發明以來，被哪些專利引用過 借著專利與專利間，以及專利與論文間引用與被引用關係，可以看出一項專利的理論、技術起源。並用Citing Patent的連結，可以迅速追蹤到一項技術自誕生以來，最新的進展情況。 The Derwent Manual Codes are assigned to patents by Derwent抯 indexers. They are used to indicate the novel technical aspects of an invention, and also its applications. Using Manual Codes to create a detailed search strategy can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of searching. Manual codes are arranged in hierarchies where there is a broad or general code at the top of the hierarchy followed by subdivisions of the codes into more and more specific categories. For example, the manual code J07 is defined as "Refrigeration; ice; gas liquefaction/solidification." The manual code is broken down into four subdivisions: J07-A – Refrigeration machines, plants, or systems, combined heating and refrigeration systems J07-B – Freezing of (semi)liquids J07-C – Refrigerators, cooling, and freezing apparatus J07-D – Gas liquefaction, solidification, or separation by pressure or cold Each of these is further broken down into more specific subdivisions. For instance, J07-B02 is specifically about "ice or snow production for special purposes." When searching using the manual codes, it is important to use the asterisk truncation character. For example, searching for J07-B will yield a different set of patents than searching for J07-B*. (J07-B will find patents that have not been assigned to one of the subdivisions within the J07-B hierarchy, while J07-B* will find those patents as well as all patents within all subdivisions in the J07-B hiearchy.)
