The databases have also been grouped by discipline, or type of data, so you can easily search multiple STN databases for topics such as pharmaceuticals, or for specific types of data such as patents or chemical structure diagrams. Well, the global economy may have been working in slow-motion last year, but the good news is that the number of research articles and patents added to our databases continues to accelerate. The news from CAS is very good: 2009 was another record-setting year for database and content building. More than 10 million small molecules were added to REGISTRY in 2009, for a total of 51.3 million. More than 1.2 million publications from journals, patents, and other sources were indexed in CA/CAplus, bringing total indexed publications to more than 28.7 million. CAplus now has a total of 5.5 million indexed patents. It’s also interesting to note that our more than 5.4 million reactions were added to our CASREACT database in 2009, to include nearly 22 million reactions. At this at time, CAS expanded coverage of the Argentina National Institute of Industrial Properties. Costa Rican patent documents expand CAS’ already substantial coverage of patent authorities from smaller countries. Patent information from these smaller patent authorities is largely inaccessible to many patent searchers, and CAS is one of only a few information provides that cover smaller patent authorities. CAS is also expanding coverage of Just Accepted Manuscripts (or JAM), which are peer-reviewed and accepted for publication, but are posted online prior to technical editing, formatting for publication, and author proofing. “Just Accepted” manuscripts are not considered the final scientific version of record. The As Soon As Publishable (or ASAP) article, which has been technically edited and formatted, represents the final scientific article of record. The ASAP article has the same DOI as the “Just Accepted” manuscript. EMBASE Classic enhanced with 1.9M CAS RNs EMBASE adds unique MEDLINE® records Derwent databases add new patent thesaurus DWPI revises author abstract indexing and adds ALLSTR format FASTA/2 added to USGENE and PCTGEN INPADOC enriched with new SELECT fields INSPEC maps indexing schemes to WIPO IPC system MEDLINE extends coverage back to 1947 PATDPAFULL standardizes on STN formats STN database producers continue to enhance and expand their databases. I won’t go through all of these, but wanted to give you an impression of how much is happening. Recently, for example, EMBASE has expanded its indexing collection to more than 7,000 journals and increased the size of its database by 8.4 million records going back to 1948 by adding unique records from MEDLINE The MEDLINE backfile has been extended by an additional year back to 1947, adding providing an extra 63,839 records to MEDLINE’s coverage. Earlier this year, CAS and its partner FIZ Karlsruhe announced that a new STN platform will be introduced over the next two years.
