4 1.sign -- representamen (依據) 某件事物的根據
Peirce, “we think only in signs ” semiosis的過程透過三個方向： 1.sign -- representamen (依據) 某件事物的根據 2.mental image -- interpretant (助釋，言詮) 標物被接受的形式 3.object – referent (標物) 記號的根據

5 EX: 一個人看到一幅畫，說是一籃水果的靜物，而那影像，是圍繞其他東西，是某個東西的sign -- representamen (依據)。而觀者在他的心中形塑這個影像，是依據他聯想的某個東西的影像。而這個心理的影像(mental image)就是 interpretant (助釋，言詮)。而interpretant指向object – referent (標物)。Object對每個人都不一樣。可能對某人代表真實的水果，對某人是靜物畫，對某人又是一大筆錢，對某人又是17世紀的荷蘭。對這幅畫來說object是個人主觀的和接受－決定(reception-determined)的。

8 Pierce自己的定義 1. sign -- representamen 某人對某事的觀點的依據，sign它對某人訴說，在那個人的心中創造一個同義的sign，或更多發展的sign 2. 這個sign所創造的是第一個sign的interpretant (助釋，言詮) 3. 這個sign象徵的東西就是object – referent (標物) sign所象徵的那個object – referent (標物)，並不是在所有的面向，而是有那麼幾分的觀念，我有時叫它ground(基底) of the representamen

11 Icon/iconic/icone/相像或象形 ： 一個sign，具有提供significant(象徵)的特色，即使它的物體並不存在。就像鉛筆的條紋像描繪一條幾何線段。
Index/indexical/indice/指涉的符號: 一個sign立刻失去製造sign的物體的特色，但如果沒有interpretant (助釋，言詮)不會失去那個特色。一個有彈孔的模子像一個射擊的sign，沒有射擊就沒有那個洞。但是不論任何人有沒那個意識去歸因射擊，那而還是有個洞。 Symbol/symbolic/symbole/象徵: 是一個sign，失去描繪它成為一個sign的特色如果沒有interpretant (助釋，言詮)。就像口語演說指涉的，僅由於被擁有signification(意指作用)的人所了解。

12 Symbol/symbolic/symbole/象徵: a mode in which the signifier does not resemble the signified but which is fundamentally arbitrary or purely conventional - so that the relationship must be learnt: e.g. language in general, numbers, morse code, traffic lights, national flags; Icon/iconic/icone/相像或象形: a mode in which the signifier is perceived as resembling or imitating the signified (recognizably looking, sounding, feeling, tasting or smelling like it) - being similar in possessing some of its qualities: e.g. a portrait, Index/indexical/indice/指涉的符號: a mode in which the signifier is not arbitrary but is directly connected in some way (physically or causally) to the signified - this link can be observed or inferred: e.g. 'natural signs'

20 Semiology 符號學 'signifier'符指/能指/指符(signifiant) - the form which the sign takes. 'signified'符徵/所指/意符(signifié) - the concept it represents. Example: signifier: the word open; signified concept: that the shop is open for business.
