9 Did you know… 點diăn:order on the spot, ex. 點菜、點歌、點名…= call the roll 叫jiào is used as “to order” here, which is similar to點 叫太多=order too much. 喝hē =drink, ex. 喝湯 Chinese people say drink soup instead of eating soup. 要yào=want, 我要… is more straight forward than 我想要… (I would like to have…). The later one is considered to be more polite in some situations because it’s less demanding. Measure words: When counting objects, a measure word is always used, although different objects have different measure words. For example: 一碗湯=a bowl of soup, 一杯水=a glass of water, 一杯茶=a cup of tea, 兩雙筷子= two pairs of chopsticks, 一盤魚=a plate of fish. 碗、雙、杯、盤are all used as measure words.

Ask your friend to help you to order. 7. Ask your friend to try their fish that is very fresh. 8. Order a bowl of Egg Drop Soup and a plate of steamed fish. 9. Tell the waiter you have ordered too much. Request him to pack up for you. 10. The waiter asks you if you want fried rice or white rice.

19 Wrap up test Make up a dialogue and act it out: Y: you W: waiter “You and your friend are in a Chinese restaurant. You ask for English menu for both of you. You like chicken and your friend likes fish. When the waiter asks if you are ready to order, you ask him to give you soda first and your friend wants lemon juice with ice. The waiter recommends you their vegetable is very fresh and seafood is especially good while you telling him to wait a moment. Place your order using the menu on the book page 131(at least two dishes and two bowls of soup), and ask for a pair of chopsticks for each one of you. You have ordered too much so the waiter asks if you can’t fish it should he help you to pack up the leftover later. (yes) Compliment the food and the restaurant. Tell your friend to give $20.00 tips for good service.”
