This research was done by Elsevier's Advanced Technology group in 2003(?) at the Cold Spring Harbor laboratories, Mass. USA labs famous for cutting edge research in molecular biology. Bottom axis shows the average time spent in each phase of the research. The vertical axis shows how “information intensive" this phase of the research cycle is. You can see above that areas A and B – exhaustive review and broader research are highly information intensive and occupy a long period of time – typically up to a year. Time saved in this part of the research workflow can potentially add dramatically to the productivity and efficiency of the researcher. Part A a typical task here involves Looking for all studies, literature search – Tools used are multiple. abstracts searches and Actions: Print abstracts & citations, Link to download articles, Locate ALL articles. Similarly part B Share findings: Determine field’s interest in issue, Exchange ideas with others, Develop network or collaboration, Need: Validate research question, Establish background. Material for presentation or poster, Finding applicable conferences, again Tools used : PubMed, MEDLINE abstracts searches & use of EndNote. Web searches for scientists, conferences Research carried out on behalf of Elsevier by Redesign Research at the University of Toronto, department of Pharmacology & Pharmaceutical Sciences
