He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 13:5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

wash my feet?”
John 13 13:6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 13:7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”

John 13 13:8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 13:9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”

And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 13:11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

John 13 13:12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13:13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.

15 “A Life of Thanksgiving”
A Life of Thanksgiving”

John’s Thanksgiving Feast
Last Sunday, I took you to John’s Thanksgiving Feast 約翰的感恩宴席 in John 13…  We asked, “What were the things 幾件 that made John’s heart sing and give thanks forever 永遠歌唱﹐永遠讚美、感恩 ...  And there are three…

John’s Thanksgiving Feast
Last Sunday, I took you to John’s Thanksgiving Feast 約翰的感恩宴席 in John 13…  We asked, “What were the things 幾件 that made John’s heart sing and give thanks forever 永遠歌唱﹐永遠感恩 ...  And there are three…

First, it is the Passover Meal and the Lamb  You see, the Passover 逾越節 is 本來就是 the Jewish Thanksgiving 猶太人的感恩節...  Every Passover, the Jews were reminded of God’s great act of salvation...  From Slavery 奴役 to Freedom 自由...  From Darkness 黑暗 to Light 光明... From Death 死亡 to Life 生命... But John sees more... much more than a typical Jew 遠遠超過一個普通猶太人 would see...  He sees that the real bondage 真正的奴役 of man is “sin 罪的捆綁”, and the real human problem 問題 is not political 政治 or economic 經濟 in nature, but is our being separated from God 與神分離... Jesus the Lamb of God

“Passover Meal & Lamb” 「生命餅與贖罪酒」 “Heavenly Bread & Wine” John did not mentioned about these two elements 元素 in his Gospel...  Only because John is the last of the 4 Gospels to be written, and by then the early church had known well what happened on that night...  the night when Jesus was betrayed 被賣... The night when John himself was reclining 依靠 close to his Master... On the Cross, Jesus’ body was broken for us… and His blood shed for us…  He became heavenly bread and wine 生命餅與贖罪酒 for us at the Cross…

“Passover Meal & Lamb” 「生命餅與贖罪酒」 “Heavenly Bread & Wine” Here we are entering into a picture of Thanksgiving that is unique 獨有 to John...  Footwashing 洗腳... What Jesus did on that night was not a simple “humble service 謙卑服待” to His disciples…  But a Kingdom Parable enacted

21 “A Kingdom Parable Enacted”
《天國的比喻》 “A Kingdom Parable Enacted” What Jesus did on that night was not a simple “humble service 謙卑服待” to His disciples…  But a Kingdom Parable enacted And this “kingdom parable” performed by Jesus contains three parts 三部份...

22 約翰福音 第十三章 (b) laid aside his outer garments...
John 13 13:4 Jesus (a) rose from supper... (b) laid aside his outer garments... 13:5 (c) washed disciples’ feet... having finished... 13:12 (d) put on his outer garments... (e) resumed his place... Part 1... Part 2... Part 3... And at the center of this kingdom parable is Part 2... Section C... It is an enactment 劇場表演 of Philippians 2…

24 found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient
Philippians 2 2:6 … though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with 2:7 God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the 2:8 form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 2:9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the 2:10 name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus 2:11 every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

25 “Jesus Washing Disciples’ Feet”
Jesus Washing Disciples’ Feet” What took place in John 13 is not simply…

26 “Jesus in Humble Service”
Jesus in Humble Service” Nor is it “Jesus in Humble Service”…

27 “The Life of Jesus Christ”
The Life of Jesus Christ” Rather, it is a summary of the Life of Jesus… You see, after John had encountered Jesus…  He received a PhD… but not the ordinary kind…

28 “Permanent Head Damage”
《永久頭腦創傷》 “Permanent Head Damage” You see, after John had encountered Jesus…  He received a PhD… but not the ordinary kind… He began to see everything through the lens of the Cross  And thus he became a worshiper of the Cross… It is that “PhD” that makes a person truly Christian 基督徒…  And thus John was forever grateful for the three things…

“Passover Meal & Lamb” 「生命餅與贖罪酒」 “Heavenly Bread & Wine” And thus John was forever grateful for the three things… which he witnessed 見証 during the Last Supper… For they all pointed forward to the Cross of Jesus…  Now I want you to imagine cooking 烹調 this Thanksgiving Meal 感恩宴席 together with John 約翰…

John’s Thanksgiving Feast
No ordinary ingredients 普通成分… Gospel ingredients… into a boiling pot…

33 洗腳的一生 A Life of Footwashing 「盡心愛慕上帝」 「熱愛兄弟姐妹」
“Loving God with Whole Hearts” And in the Gospel of John, the Life of Thanksgiving 感恩的一生 is also known as 也就是 the Life of Footwashing 洗腳的一生… Listen to what Jesus said… 「熱愛兄弟姐妹」 “Loving Brothers & Sisters in Christ”

washed your feet, you also ought to wash
John 13 13:13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. According to John 據約翰所說, the Christian life is one that flows from Jesus’ Footwashing to Our Footwashing…

35 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing”
《從耶穌洗腳到我們洗腳》 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing” What does that mean?  How does a life of footwashing look like? Notice 不知道你有沒有留意到 that in the Gospel of John, there are actually two records 記錄 of “physical footwashing”…

36 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing”
《從耶穌洗腳到我們洗腳》 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing” Notice that in the Gospel of John, there are actually two records of “physical footwashing”…  One is by Jesus… And you would have thought that Jesus came first…  But no, this time, He came in second…  Before Jesus washed feet, someone else washed feet already…  And that person is Mary…

John 12 12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 12:3 Mary... took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Washing feet as a sign of extreme devotion  To wash the feet of Jesus is to love God with all our hearts and all our souls and all our strength...  1 year wages… Joh 12:4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, Joh 12:5 "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" Joh 12:6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.

but you do not always have me.”
John 12 12:7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the 12:8 day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” A preview of Jesus’ burial  Not sure how much Mary knew…  She was at Jesus’ Cross and Empty Tomb… not really knowing or understanding Jesus’ self prophecies… What Mary did was an act of supreme devotion

39 “An Act of Supreme Love”
《一個至愛的行動》 “An Act of Supreme Love” She was pouring it all out 傾倒 because she had been filled up 充滿… Because of who Jesus is – the Son of God and God Himself, even a mere appearance 出現 on earth would deserve 應受 our pouring out 傾倒 of everything in worship 敬拜…  But He did not just appear… He walked among sinners 罪人同行; He ate with sinners 罪人同桌; He preached the Gospel of God’s Kingdom 天國的福音 to sinners…  Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus… Lazarus being raised… What Mary did not know is that this was just the “beginning 開始” of Jesus’ filling 充滿 them…  But still, there was more filling yet to come…  Death, Resurrection, Ascension… Heavenly Intercession… Eternal Life… Mary together with all Jesus’ disciples would be filled up to the fullest 充滿…  By His outpouring love on the Cross… they would be filled up… and they would be poured out again… and again…  75 pounds of myrrh for Jesus’ burial… 75 years of wages… Because Jesus poured out 傾倒 His life for us, we must and must pour out 傾倒 all of our lives for Him…  This is the only biblical way to live… This is the Christian life…

40 “His Pouring Out & Our Pouring Out”
《從耶穌傾倒到我們傾倒》 “His Pouring Out & Our Pouring Out” If Jesus did not poured out His life for us, our lives still belong to us…  But because He has… to the fullest… this life that we live is no longer ours, but it belongs entirely to Jesus…

Tim Keller (1950-Present) “American Pastor”
I am absolutely bankcrupt 完全的破產… yet Jesus paid for everything 100%...  Good News…  Bad News…

 I am now wholly owned 擁有 by Him…  I have no control over my life any more! She is absolutely correct!!!  Christianity 基督教 demands us of everything 所有… not just something 一些… not even paying by installments 分期付款…

43 “Moral Religions vs. Christian Faith”
《道德宗教與基督信仰》 “Moral Religions vs. Christian Faith” Better Man vs. New Man…  Gradual improvements vs. Dying and Rising… Moral Religions: You are still your own… You can add to or subtract from your own righteousness…  Moving up the stairs one step 步 at a time… Many applications vs. One and Only Application… But Christian Faith demands us to go “all in”…  Died with Christ… Raised with Christ…  Yet not with a heavy heart 沉重的心, but with a joyful heart 喜樂的心…  Because our loving Savior 救主 Jesus Christ had given all to us… Mary, Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus…  John the Beloved Disciple…  New Testament writers identifying themselves as “slaves 奴隸” of Christ…

50 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing”
《從耶穌洗腳到我們洗腳》 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing” So here is the true Christian life…  Because He became slave for us; we would now become slaves for Him… Love slaves of Christ…  (1) Money, (2) Time, (3) Energy (Olympic Atheletes) , (4) Relationships…  Love Slaves of Christ It is hard 太難了…  But it is only hard when we forget what He has done for us…  We are love slaves of Jesus Dear brothers and sisters, let us encourage each other to live as love slaves of Jesus…  2 Corinthians 5…

2 Corinthians 5 5:14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that 5:15 one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. This is the first meaning of “a Life of Footwashing”…  Loving God with all our hearts... But this is just half of the Greatest Commandment 最大的誡命, isn’t it?  Loving our Neighbors…  In this case our dear brothers and sisters...

52 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing”
《從耶穌洗腳到我們洗腳》 “His Footwashing & Our Footwashing” Loving God with all our hearts... But this is just half of the Greatest Commandment 最大的誡命, isn’t it?  Loving our Neighbors…  In this case our dear brothers and sisters... A community of love

washed your feet, you also ought to wash
John 13 13:13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. What does that mean?  As you probably can guess, “washing one another’s feet 彼此洗腳” means “loving one another 彼此相愛”… And that becomes very clear as we get to the second half 後半部分 of John 13…

John 13 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 13:35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Just as I have washed your feet, you also are to wash each other’s feet… But how can this be a new commandment 新命令?  This is now the final day of Jesus’ life on earth  How can this be the first time 第一次 He teaches them to love one another?  It is quite impossible 不可能…  Let’s keep reading… Verse 35…  Warm and fuzzy Christian fellowship  Foreign students…  But that doesn’t sound like what Jesus would teach… Notice that shortly after John 13, the same commandment was being repeated by Jesus in John 15…

I have loved you. that you will love one another.
John 15 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 15:17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. What is going on here?  Within a very short time (same night), Jesus twice 兩次 or even thrice 甚至三次 gave them what seems to be a fairly “common 普通的命令” commandment…  Why is He doing that?  And what does that truly mean? Let me take you back to John 13 to look at the context 背景 under which Jesus gave this “new” (but again not so new) commandment 新命令…

John 13 13:33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ This is right before Jesus gave the “new commandment 新命令”…  Now you see why Jesus so earnestly 急切地 gave them this “new” commandment…  It was because He was about to leave them… Jesus called the disciples “little children”…  What does that mean? Well, it is an expression of affection 慈愛 and intimacy 親密…  Sure, but in the Gospel of John, the term “children” carries a very special connotation 涵意…  Do you remember how the Gospel John begins? Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Joh 1:2 He was in the beginning with God. Joh 1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. Joh 1:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. Joh 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

57 “An Invasion of True Light”
《真光大侵入》 “An Invasion of True Light” Joh 1:1 太初有道,道與神同在,道就是神。 Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Joh 1:2 He was in the beginning with God. Joh 1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. Joh 1:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. Joh 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

58 “Divine Evil-Detector”
『天降照妖鏡』 “Divine Evil-Detector” And this true light is like an evil-detecting device 照妖鏡…  It can reveal the hearts 揭露人心 of men and women… No doubt, the “bad guys 壞人” would hate 恨惡 this light…  But what about the “good guys 好人”?

Good People Well, the “good guys” who came to this light… will be proven “dark” also!

60 Well, the “good guys” who came to this light… will be proven “dark 黑夜人” also!
Yet, this true and good light 善良、美好的真光… came to call all men and women to Himself…

John 1 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, 1:13 he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. From darkness comes a “new” group of people…  (1) Receive and believe in His Name, (2) Children of God, (3) Born of not blood / flesh, (4) Born of God…  They were separated 分開 from the world 世界… and became “visible 看見” through their faith 信心 and lives 生命… Will these new people 新類型人 be welcomed 歡迎 and loved 愛護 by the world?  No, they would not, not according to Jesus…  On the other hand, they would be hated 恨惡 by the world…  They became the world’s new target 新的目標… especially when their protector 保護者 – Jesus – would depart from them… It is under this context 背景 that Jesus gave them the “new” commandment to love one another…

John 13 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 13:35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. It is under this context 背景 that Jesus gave them the “new” commandment to love one another… Imagine that New City Church is the only Christian Church in Philadelphia…  We are the only Christians in Philadelphia…  And say I as your pastor is about to die… or to leave Philadelphia for another part of the world…  What would I say to you?  I would say “Love One Another”… and very earnestly 迫切地… especially if you are like my own children, who always seem to be fighting with each other… And to give it a greater emphasis I will say, “Dear New City, a new commandment I give to you…”  A new commandment for a new life situation But that would not be the only commandment I give to New City though…  In fact, it will not be the first…  Rather, I will say, “Love God 你們要愛神… Love the Word of God  and then I will say again, “Love one another… Love one another by exhorting one another 彼此鼓勵大家來愛神 to love God and the Word of God…” If I, a human shepherd 地上牧羊人, would care to say these…  how much more will Jesus the Great Shepherd of our souls?  Love each other… How?  Encourage each other to love God… And let the world know that love you have for God and each other…  For this is your calling… And then…

63 “Christians in the World”
Christians in the World” And then they will find you and they will hate you… If you don’t believe it, listen to Jesus in John 15…

I have loved you. that you will love one another.
John 15 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 15:17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. 13:35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. And then…

John 15 15:18 If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it 15:19 hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 14:18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. But more than that, Jesus also prayed… and is still praying… for us 我們 – His people 他的子民…

66 約翰福音 第十七章 for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
John 17 17:9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

John 17 17:11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

you keep them from the evil one.
John 17 17:15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 17:16 They are not of the world, just as 17:17 I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. Use the Word of God 神的話 to “love one another 彼此相愛”… And through the witness of this Christian community  The world comes to see God…  And those who were chosen will be drawn to Him…

69 “The Pilgrim’s Progress”
The Pilgrim’s Progress”

John 17 17:20 I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will 17:21 believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Cyprian of Carthage
“Early Church Father” Gospel Tract

“It is a bad world, Donatus, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it a company of quiet and holy people who have learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a thousand times better than any of the pleasures of our sinful life.

They are despised and persecuted, but they care not: they are masters of their souls. They have overcome the world. These people, Donatus, are the Christians, — and I am one of them.” May what Cyprian said becomes true for New City as we strive to love God and His Word and each other in Jesus Christ. Amen.
