1 Understanding Local Culture
Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures University of Wisconsin, Madison

2 Local Culture and Place-Based Education
Both the study of local culture and place-based education focus on a physical place and interactive learning. For folklorists, the study of local culture, or “local learning,” emphasizes the traditional knowledge and processes of learning that are grounded in community life.

3 Local Learning 区域学习 “Local learning” emphasizes direct connection to the community: Studying local culture restores community-school connections and creates authentic learning experiences for students. For folklorists, studying local culture focuses on interviewing community members, documenting their work and environments, and thus capturing meaningful knowledge. When teachers and students study their local place, they appreciate and possess their own culture.

4 Place-Based Education
‘‘Place-based education” is learning that is rooted in what is local—the unique history, environment, culture, economy, literature, and art of a particular place. The community provides the context for learning, student work focuses on community needs and interests, and community members serve as resources and partners in teaching and learning.

5 Students Picking Lettuce
Place-based education, with its emphasis on hands-on learning, is often employed in charter schools and classes focused on environmental studies. Students Picking Lettuce

7 Students learn a traditional Oneida dance at a Folk Arts In the Schools artist residency. Participatory learning is part of local learning.

8 The Future in Local Culture: Mobile Learning

9 Mobile technology makes it even more enticing for students to study local culture.

11 The “game” creator can set up a map of the local environment, and through the use of GPS, the player, sees the tagged places where he or she can pick up digital information.

12 As players walk through the contemporary physical environment…

13 they see a video of a historical event in this exact location.
