Also for line powered applications, which are always on (e.g. W-Lan router, STP, SSD, TV,…), energy consumption has become important. To make this issue transparent the example of wirless mouse is given here. Battery life time has become a key selling proposition. As it is the case in wireless mouse business, where the only last differentiation lies in the battery life time. Vendors explicitly advertise on this (see Logitech). This is an example how excellent efficiency yields an increased battery life time.

In this example the customer used an additional external filter to improve the regulation performance, but still the range was only in a range 8m.

In this example two comparators are required to implement the low battery functionality, which is used in case of power failure to shut down system components in a correct way and save data. For the power ok functionality also an external comparator can be used to signal the valid supply to the system, in order to power up other components in a correct and save way (power sequencing). With LBI (AS1331) and PoK function(AS1340, AS1341, AS1362, AS1343,…) already integrated in the PM a cost saving of at least 0.20USD can be achieved and the PCB space as well. 低电池: 关闭系统进行节省

引言 任何产品的应用都需要电源管理! The nice thing about power management is that every application has a supply and therefore powermangement is needed! But it is important to ask!! e.g. when you sell the attractive and sexy Rotary Encoder it is not enough to close the deal on this only. Just ask one more question: How is it going to be supplied? The power managment market is one of the fastest growing market in the analog semiconductor. Nearly every battery and now also line powered application runs a DCDC or LDO.

效率对比 节电模式 非节电模式 Power Save Modes improve the efficiency at light loads. As you can see on the right figure efficiency drops significantly without power save mode when output current is low. The reason for this is that at light loads the DCDC still switches at a fixed frequency, although it is not necessary. Since every switching cycle produces internal losses the goal of the power save mode reduce switching only to the necessary ones.

Efficiency needs to take into account the load conditions over time! In this example we consider an application that consumes 10mA for a certain period of time (e.g. 95%) and then goes into an active stage for 5% of the time e.g. for measurements. When we look at the efficiency graph given on the right we see that both operation points are pretty ok (Efficiency at 10mA is 91% and for 100mA it is even 93%). As a rough estimation the overall efficiency can be calculated. For simplicity we do not distinguish between input and output current. So lets assume currents as inputs to the DCDC. Overall Efficiency = (100mA*DutyCycle(100mA)*Efficiency(100mA)+ 10mA*Duty Cycle(10mA)*Efficiency(10mA)) (100mA*Duty Cycle(100mA)+ 10mA*Duty Cycle(1mA)) So the exact efficiency number is in this case 93%. But let‘s consider a DCDC like RT8010 (see slide 9), where the efficiency drops significantly at light loads. In this case the overall efficiency will be strongly determined by the lower light load efficiency. Doing the math's the efficiency is 58%. As a conclusion it is important to figure out how a system works. As in this example both cases the efficiency given in the datasheet are up to 93%, but the final efficiency in the datasheet is different! t 方案 1: 整 体 效 率 = 93% 方案 2: = 58%

The AS1323 delivers 100mA from a single AA cell input and can provide fixed output voltages of 2.7V, 3.0V and 3.3V. The AS1323 operates from a voltage between 0.75V and 2V. The minimum start-up voltage of 0.95V The AS1323 needs only 1.6µA quiescent current and offers a shutdown mode drawing less than 200nA of current, which makes AS1323 optimal for light load applications. Additionally, the AS1323 features a true output disconnect while in shutdown. The AS1323 does not need an external diode and has been designed to operate with physically small external components. Typical external components are two capacitors and a 10µH inductor. The AS1323 is available in a 5-pin TSOT23 package for the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Therefore the efficiency at higher loads as 100mA is weaker. In case that efficiency at higher load is required the AS1329 can be used. Always consider the overall efficiency (see slides about efficiency) The input voltage range is limited to 2V, so single cell applications (1.5V battery) is the target application.

The AS1331 offers an adjustable output voltage range from 2.5 to 3.3V from an input voltage range of 1.8 to 5.5V. To reduce external part count as well as PCB space fixed output voltage variants of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.3V with ±3% accuracy are also available. Furthermore the AS1331 offers 300mA of output current. Buck Boost converters are used when the desired output voltage is in between the input voltage range. So in cases where the input voltage varies quite significantly the best result in terms of efficiency is obtained with an buck boost converter. e.g. when a Li-ion battery is fully charged the input voltage is 4.2V or higher, in discharge condition the voltage can get down to 2.7V and in future even lower. When the desired supply voltage is e.g. 3.3V a buck boost converter is the optimal solution. Multi supply applications where the system is supplied by two sources, depending on availability. USB (5V) powered and battery powered systems. Other applications: e.g. Supercap discharge, improvement of supplies (+/-10%  +/-3%) The AS1331 additionally offers a battery monitoring circuitry which can also be used for power-ok signaling. 1.29$ 1k

Fixed frequency concepts do not achieve such low quiescent currents and therefore suffer a worse efficiency at light loads. The output voltage range of AS1331 is limited to 2.5V to 3.3V. But since the most interesting supplies for Buck Boost are in the 3V range that does not limit the market. (Remember! Buck Boosts are used for Vout, which are in the middle of the input voltage range)

It features an adjustable output voltage, which can be set with external resistor divider between 0.6V to 5.5V. But also fixed output voltage variants(1.2V, 1.5V and 1.8V) are available saving the external resistor divider. AS1324 is very powerful and can deliver an output current of up to 600mA from a input voltage between 2.7V to 5.5V, which makes the device ideal for single Li-Ion cell or triple AA cell supplies. The 1.5MHz fixed switching frequency minimizes PCB footprint by allowing the use of tiny, low profile inductors and capacitors. This constant frequency switching results in low, predictable output noise that can be easily filtered. Additionally the AS1324 offers high output voltage accuracy as well as a low output voltage ripple. Additionally the integrated automatic power save mode increases efficiency in light load conditions, consuming only 30µA of quiescent current. The reduced power consumption substantially increases battery life in many applications.
