Synthesis of Amino Acids 1JACS 1995 2JOC 1987 问题？创意？ 实验、计算。。。 发表：口头报告、论文、专利。。。 新的问题？发展、延伸。。。 同行评价、引用、应用。。。 In October 1991, at the 6th International Conference “ Science Editing in the Age of Global Communication” sponsored by IFSE in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Prof Joshua Lederberg, the Nobel Laureate geneticist, gave a keynote presentation entitled “ Communication as the Root of Scientific Process”. We know that information fuels research and we know that the process by which research information is absorbed into the overall knowledge base is an organic one. New knowledge grows out of pre-existing knowledge. An individual scientist poses a question or theory. He reviews the published literature to verify whether others have also considered a particular question and if so, how. The researcher may seek to duplicate the investigation of others or, in seeking to support or eliminate a particular theory, the researcher may devise a new experiment and observe the results. Those results are made known to other researchers either by a presentation at a conference or through the traditional publication of an article in a recognized journal. Other researchers, the author's peers and colleagues, read and evaluate the work. That evaluation extends beyond the specific paper to the sources cited by the author. These citations detail previously published materials, important knowledge that influenced the thought processes, understanding, and information used in developing the current research premise. The mass of information within the scientific communications continues to grow rapidly, which leads to a corresponding increase in the published materials. Here comes the same practical problem most bench scientists struggle with daily, as Prof Joshua Lederbug mentioned in his presentation, that is, how to keep up with the information or, more precisely, spend one’s time most effectively by locating and retrieving the “must read” papers or “must know” information in order to continue the progress of the science and technology.
