3 The Story of Dr. Doris Brougham
在美國西雅圖誕生的彭蒙惠本名是Doris Brougham，Doris在英文的原意是「上帝的禮物」。她從小立定要到中國傳道的志向，放棄音樂學院的全額獎學金轉念聖經學院，二十一歲時告別親愛的父母，整整坐了六個禮拜的船，才從西雅圖抵達中國上海，正式投入海外宣教士的行列。

4 未料，抵達中國不到一年就碰上國共內戰，彭蒙惠與宣教士們一起逃到香港，有些年輕宣教士打包回國、有些宣教士轉往日本，彭蒙惠卻選擇到「福爾摩沙」繼續奉獻。期間雖然收到父親因吸入太多噴漆毒氣而身亡的電報，在媽媽和上帝的鼓勵之下，彭蒙惠沒有返回美國，而在一九五一年按照原訂計畫前往台灣花蓮宣教，從此與台灣結下半世紀的情緣。

5 為了廣為宣傳上帝的愛，心思靈敏的彭蒙惠在花蓮創辦台灣第一個福音廣播節目，並隨著錄製規模的擴大搬到台中和台北。
　一九六二年教育部委託復興電台製作一個具有代表性的英語教學節目，很自然地便將廣播經驗豐富又熱心的「老外」彭蒙惠列為優先合作人選。

6 彭蒙惠為了提升聽眾學英文的興趣，就把「單字、句子、文法和新觀念都融合在一起」的文章當成教材，邀請英文程度還不錯的聽眾到現場一起錄音，使廣播錄音間變成一個真正能夠互動的教室，將熱絡的會話氣氛傳達給收音機前的聽眾，果然一推出後就大受好評。

7 為了充實空中英語教室的內容，彭蒙惠每個月至少看十本以上的英文雜誌，更從美國訂閱最新的書摘大全，將全世界的新知吸收消化後，才改寫成通俗易懂的空中英語教室教材。
「不只是教英文，也要教看法ideas」是彭蒙惠的中心教學理念，早期教材內容不但教聽眾們「怎麼搭飛機、怎麼跟外國人介紹台灣文化」等內容，更廣納旅遊、科學、醫學和環保新知。

8 隨著空中英語教室規模的擴大，彭蒙惠在一九九四年將盈餘拿來創立「彭蒙惠教育獎學金」，只要家境困難的學生讀好英文，就有機會得到獎學金的鼓勵，每次審核申請資料時，彭蒙惠總是不捨得放棄任何一位需要幫助的人，最後通過申請的人往往是原本限定員額的兩倍。

在台灣奉獻半個世紀，彭蒙惠數度錯失了姻緣機會，但一生樂於助人的她只是笑著說，「如果我結婚生了小孩，我一定會專注在教育自己的小孩上，就沒有精力去幫忙到很多小孩了。」 Godmother of English teaching in Taiwan

10 為感念彭老師對台灣英語教育的奉獻，內政部頒發永久居留權給彭女士，陳水扁總統甚至親自於總統府接見她，並頒授象徵全國文官最高榮譽的「紫色大綬景星勳章」，陳水扁總統在頒贈典禮中，特別稱許空中英語教室的努力與成就。他說：「四十年來，空中英語教室為台灣學子們擴展了國際視野，提昇英語的競 爭力；把台灣推向全台灣。」

11 Doris Brougham & Studio Classroom
Dr. Doris Brougham has been a friend to English teachers and students in Taiwan for over 40 years. Studio Classroom, the English teaching program Dr. Brougham founded in 1962, has taught English to hundreds of thousands of native Chinese speakers in Taiwan, Mainland China and throughout the world.

12 In addition to her work with Studio Classroom, Doris has taught English through various other venues, including universities, private companies and government agencies. In 1994, she established the Doris Brougham Scholarship to provide financial assistance to high school students with good grades in English, as well as college and graduate school students majoring in English or Mass Communications.

13 Throughout her career as an educator, Doris has received numerous awards. The most recent was Taiwan's highest civilian honor, the Order of Brilliant Star with Violet Grand Cordon. During the award ceremony, President Chen Shui Bian praised the efforts and achievements of Studio Classroom. He said, "Studio Classroom has broadened the international scope of Taiwanese students over the past 40 years, and raised society's level of English competence. It has brought the world to Taiwan and laid a solid foundation for English education here in Taiwan."
