這篇經文的第一句是「基督的靈魂，聖化我！」（Anima Christi, sanctifica me!）因此西方語文常取頭兩個拉丁字 Anima Christi 作為經文的名稱。 這篇經文在十四世紀後半葉，已經在西班牙、 日耳曼等區域通行。 到了十五世紀，一般的熱心書中，大概有此經文。 作者是誰，已不可考。

8 依納爵在《神操》書中，只提出經文的名稱，並沒有抄錄全文（63、147、253、258號）。然而，在他死後二十年，1577年的《神操》版本，才將此篇經文的全文，放在《神操》書的首頁。
這篇經文是向主耶穌的人性，尤其是向受苦的基督祈求。文字簡潔、通俗，但意義深長、祈求懇切，把我們每人內心渴望向救主耶穌訴說的話語，傾吐出來。

Give me that sensus Christi – the sensing of Christ about which St Paul speaks (1 Cor 2:16): that I may feel with your feelings, with the sentiments of your heart, which basically are love for your Father and love for humanity. Teach me your way of relating to disciples, to sinners, to children, to Pharisees, Pilates and Herods. May I learn from you and from your ways, as St Ignatius did: how to eat and drink; how to attend banquets; how to act when hungry or thirsty, when tired from the ministry, when in need of rest or sleep. Teach me how to be compassionate to the suffering, to the poor, the blind, the lame and the lepers. Give me that grace, that sensus Christi, your very heartbeat, that I may live all my life, interiorly and exteriorly, proceeding and discerning with your spirit, exactly as you did during your mortal life.                                                   Fr.
