1 Managing Solid Wastes

2 Introduction According to the Environment Bureau, municipal solid wastes generated by each Hong Kong people amounts to an average of 1.27 kilograms per day. It is forecast that the existing three landfills will be completely filled by 2015, 2017 and 2019 subsequently. Therefore, there is an imminent for effective solid waste management. To tackle this issue, stakeholders concerned have suggested different management strategies, including extending landfills, constructing Integrated Waste Management Facilities with the adoption of advanced incineration technology, recycling food waste etc.

3 Introduction There is also another view that we should follow the practices of Taiwan in implementing an Environmental Levy on solid wastes. It is believed that how to manage solid wastes would become one of the most important livelihood issues that needs to be urgently addressed in the near future.

4 Questions for Enquiry:
1. What kinds of lifestyle or values, directly or indirectly, led to the generation of large amount of solid wastes by Hong Kong people? 2. It is commented that “extending landfills is the most effective mean of solving local solid wastes”. Do you agree with this view? Why or why not? 3. What kinds of waste reduction experience in Taiwan could be learnt by Hong Kong? What kinds of measures that could not be implemented in Hong Kong? Why?
