2 Introduction Hong Kong is characterised by a sophisticated fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. The daily life of Hong Kong people is affected by various cultures. A festive mood fills Christmas while the mood at some Chinese traditional festivals like the Tuen Ng Festival has become less and less festive in Hong Kong. Every traditional festival is characterised by rich meanings of customs and folklore. However, many traditional festivals have been blended with various degrees of commercial elements amid the progress of time and the interaction with foreign cultures. How traditional festivals can be preserved so that its rich cultural meanings are to be passed on is an issue worth discussing.
