6 說/说 say vs. gàosu tell, inform
The verbs 說/说 and gàosu can both be used to say that someone tells or informs someone of something but, in terms of grammar, the two words are used differently.

7 subject 跟 indirect object 說/说 (some information)
When 說/说 is used to say that the speaker informs someone about something, the sentence has the following structure. I told him that in a few days his Chinese will improve. 我跟他說,過幾天,他的中文會jìnbù。 我跟他说,过几天,他的中文会jìnbù。 我說他,過幾天,他的中文會jìnbù。 我说他,过几天,他的中文会jìnbù。

8 subject gàosu indirect object (some information)
Gàosu must be followed by the indirect object, the person who is being informed of something. I told him that for the past few days the students have all been very busy. 我 gàosu 他這幾天學生都很忙。 我 gàosu 他这几天学生都很忙。

9 Asking indirect questions: (Person1) 問/问 (Person2) + Question
In Mandarin, you form an indirect question by prefacing the question with: Notice: An indirect question is not followed by a question mark. What time is it now? 現在幾點鐘? 现在几点钟? Direct question He asked me what time it is now. 他問我現在幾點鐘。 他问我现在几点钟。 Indirect question

10 Asking indirect questions: (Person1) 問/问 (Person2) + Question
Notice that the order of information in indirect questions is the same as the order of information in direct questions. Who is that person? 那個人是誰? / 那个人是谁? She asked me who that person is. 她問我那個人是誰。 / 她问我那个人是谁。 Where are you going now? 你現在去哪兒? / 你现在去哪儿? She asked me where I am going now. 她問我我現在去哪兒。/ 她问我我现在去哪儿。

11 Asking indirect yes-no questions
When the indirect question involves a yes-no question, either the verb-not-verb form or the 嗎/吗 form of the question can be used. However, the verb-not-verb form is much more common. Does she study Chinese? 她學中文嗎? / 她学中文吗? He asked me if she studies Chinese. 他問我她學不學中文。 他问我她学不学中文。

12 V 了 (O) 没有 or V 过 (O) 没有 When asking about completed actions with 了 or past experiences with 過/过: Have you eaten Chinese food before? 你吃過中國飯沒有? / 你吃过中国饭没有? He asked me if I have eaten Chinese food before. 他問我我吃過中國飯没有。 他问我我吃过中国饭没有。

13 liàn習/liàn习 Little Wang asked Little Gao if the movie he saw yesterday was good-looking. 小王問小高他昨天看的那個電影好看不好看。 小王问小高他昨天看的那个电影好看不好看。 Teacher Wang asked Little Zhang if he thought Chinese class was hard. 王老師問小張他覺得中文課難不難。 王老师问小张他觉得中文课难不难。

14 liàn習/liàn习 He asked me if that Japanese class was hard.
請跟你的tóng學說說這兩個jù子 (n, sentence)。 请跟你的tóng学说说這两个jù子。 He asked me if that Japanese class was hard. He asked me how many courses I am taking this semester.
