Clifford Allbutt 用簡單的文字精確表述該篇文章的內容，描述文章的內容，而且能夠表達和相關文章的不同處。大多數讀者通常僅閱讀標題，資訊提供者（abstracting service）亦非常依賴標題。

9 標題縮寫 在標題中，盡量避免abbreviations、chemical formulas、proprietary（專利商標）、專門術語（jargon）等，因為這些都會影響到資料的檢索，例如鹽酸hydrochloric acid，一般都會以hydrochloric acid搜尋，假如標題出現HCl，則不會被搜尋到，雖然一些縮寫如DNA、PCR等，但是在標題中仍然應該盡量避免。
