4 The Text Related Information: Samuel Johnson (1709----1784) :
a famous English essayist, literary critic and dictionary compiler. In 1747, when Johnson began his “Dictionary of the English Language““, Chesterfield had at first indicated that he could be his patron, but when Johnson came to him for concrete help, Chesterfield neglected him to the point of ignoring him. Johnson was insulted and furious. In 1755, when Johnson‘s Dictionary was published and acclaimed after seven years of hard work, Chesterfield openly recommended it, hoping to get some credit for it as Johnson‘s patron. Johnson at once wrote his famous letter in a sharp style, openly denying Chesterfield‘s patronage, and attacking him outright for his behaviour. The attack, however, was made in a circumlocutions way.

6 About the author James Boswell (1740-1795)
author of The Life of Samuel Johnson, remains one of the more celebrated biographers in modern literary history. In his monumental A Life of James Boswell, Peter Martin takes on the formidable task of writing the biographer's biography ― of telling the story of a man whose numerous journals are renowned for their vivid evocation(唤起) of his life and times.

7 James Boswell Samuel Johnson

8 The moving biography A Life of James Boswell reassesses(再评价) James Boswell's achievements and uncovers the breadth of his world. Peter Martin dispels(驱散, 赶跑) the notion that Boswell's masterly Life of Johnson was an accidental work of genius, and shows that Boswell was a writer of the highest order and a complex, troubled, but ultimately appealing man.

16 Difficult Points– Translation Practise.
Lord Chesterfield, to whom Johnson had paid the high compliment of addressing to his Lordship the Plan of his Dictionary, had behaved to him in such a manner as to excite his contempt and indignation. lord ― used as a form of address for a marquis, an earl, or a viscount 勋爵(用作侯爵、伯爵或子爵的称呼) lordship ― often Lordship Used with ‘Your’, ‘His’, or ‘Their’ as a title and form of address for a man or men holding the rank of lord 常作 Lordship 阁下:与Your , his 或 their 连用,作为对拥有勋爵头衔的男子的称呼方式和头衔

18 2. When the Dictionary was upon the eve of publication, Lord Chesterfield, who,……, in a courtly manner, to soothe and insinuate himself with the Sage, … …,and further attempted to conciliate him… … soothe ― to calm or placate 使平静或安慰 insinuate ― to introduce or insert (oneself) by subtle and artful means 用微妙和机灵的方式做(自我)介绍、献媚求宠 sage ― one venerated for experience, judgment, and wisdom 圣人 conciliate ― (1) appease 安抚 (2) to please 取悦

20 3. ;but let it not, like the Tarpeian maid, be overwhelmed and crushed by unnecessary ornaments.

4. The shepherd in Virgil grew at last acquainted with love , and found him a native of the rocks. referring to the poet Virgil‘s story of Damon (戴蒙,罗马神话中的西西里人) in the 8th Eclogue (田园诗), who sings a sad song of love and heartbreak. In the quote, "Love" is a personification of the emotion, who, by living among the rocks, is proven to be a cruel and heartless character.

22 5. and to tell him, that he honored him for his manly behavior in rejecting these condescensions of Lord Chesterfield, and for resenting the…… Indeed, the force of mind which appeared in this letter, was congenial with that which Warburton himself amply possessed. condescension ― patronizingly superior behavior or attitude 恩赐态度 resent ― to feel indignantly aggrieved at 憎恶,怨恨 congenial ― having the same tastes, habits, or temperament; sympathetic 性格相似的 amply ―广泛地; 充足地; 详细地; 丰富地 He apologized amply for his suddenness.
