6 The apostle John confirms that God and Jesus were One and the same
in John 1:1-4, 14 which supports Jesus’ claim that He is also the I AM. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the of men. 14 The Word became and made his dwelling among us. 7 The discussion in John 8:31-59 took place immediately after Jesus claimed to be the light of the world. Jesus continued to talk with some people who said that they believed in Him. The question of who Jesus was remained on the minds of those present, and Jesus wanted to further explain who He really was and what it meant to follow Him. Definition of terms Illegitimate: (vs 41) a child born outside wedlock/marriage Samaritans: (vs 48) descendants of Jewish people who intermarried with non-Jews of Palestine and surrounding areas. The Jews valued racial purity and, therefore, hated the Samaritans, who were not welcome in Jewish communities in Galilee and Judea. Demon: (vs 48) a servant of the Devil filled with evil, hatred, and opposition to God; also called an evil spirit. Sometimes, a demon can “possess” a person, entering the person’s soul and controlling his or her thoughts and actions (Mark 5:1-17; Luke 9:37-43). Glory: (vss 50, 54) greatness, high position, or honor Glorify: (vs 54) to give honor, praise, or admiration to a person

8 John 8:30-36 約 翰 福 音 8:30-36 30Even as he spoke, many believed in him. 31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33They answered him, “We are Abrahamʼs descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. 1. According to Jesus, what is a true disciple? 31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 31于是耶稣对信了他的犹太人说：“你们若持守我的道，就真是我的门徒了； A true disciple is one who follows Jesus’ teaching, who believes what Jesus said about Himself and His Father, and obeys His commands. 2. According to this passage, what is the result of following Jesus’ teachings? 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 32你们必定认识真理，真理必定使你们自由。” A person who follows Jesus’ teachings will know the truth in a personal way and will find the spiritual freedom in Christ.

10 John 8:37-42 約 翰 福 音 8:37-42 37I know that you are Abrahamʼs descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38I am telling you what I have seen in the Fatherʼs presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.” 39“Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abrahamʼs children” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.” 42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. 11 John 8:48-53 約 翰 福 音 8:48-53  48The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”   49“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51I tell you the truth, if a man keeps my word, he will never see death.”  52At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. 12 3. What promise does Jesus make to those who keep and obey His words?

Did the Jews understand this type of death? 52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Who do you think you are?” The Jews did not see the difference between physical and spiritual death

My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55Though you do not know him, I know him. What bold statement did Jesus make about Himself in relation to Abraham? Before Abraham was born, Jesus already existed.

15 Analysis and discussion questions on John 8:31-59
Romans 6:6-7 says: 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin 7because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 7. What does it mean to be a slave to sin? A man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. Being unable to resist its power in your life. When you give in to sin (even though you know it is wrong), you are a slave to it (Romans 6). 8. What would Jesus say about those who say they follow Him and yet continue to live sinful lives? He would say that they are not truly His followers. A person who continues a lifestyle of sin should question his or her relationship with Jesus Christ. 9. Did Jesus’ listeners understand what Jesus was claiming about Himself? Relate your answer to the way they responded to Him. Yes, Jesus’ listeners understood that Jesus was claiming to be God. They thought He was blaspheming, that’s why they tried to stone Him. Leviticus 16.

16 10. What does it mean for the Father to glorify the Son?
Vs. 54: It means that Jesus’ didn’t glorify Himself. The Father honored Him: by a voice from heaven, at his baptism and other events, declaring him to be his beloved Son, and by the works and miracles he did by him; as he afterwards also honored him by raising him from the dead. 11. Has Jesus been the only one in history to claim to be God? Are there people today who make this claim? Others have claimed to be divine: Jim Jones, David Koresh, Sun Myung Moon, Guru Maharashi, Eastern Lightning (China), etc. Read Mark 13: Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 5 耶 稣 说 ： 你 们 要 谨 慎 ， 免 得 有 人 迷 惑 你 们 。6 将 来 有 好 些 人 冒 我 的 名 来 ， 说 ： 我 是 基 督 ， 并 且 要 迷 惑 许 多 人 。 Discuss Jesus’ statement about others who make this claim.
