By the end of this chapter, you will be able to • Tell how many people are in your party in a formal way • Name the basic spices and food served in a Chinese restaurant • Indicate that you visit the restaurant often and you especially like the food here because it is very fresh and the price is inexpensive • Ask for water or hot tea, and about how much is charged • Request for the same thing as someone else • Invite or treat someone to have dinner with you

17 The use of 請 (2) 2. As a treat~ (Which implies that the person will pay for it.) 請客 someone’s treat Ex. 我請客 請你吃飯 treat someone a dinner Ex.星期六我請你吃飯 treat someone to a movie Ex.明天我請（你）看 電影 3. As an invitation~ 請用茶=請喝茶(喝茶is more straight forward then用茶) 請來我家 Ex.我想請（你）來我家

Did you know … 位wèi is a measure word for people. Ex. 幾几位=How many people? 哪位=Which person or who 跟gēn=to follow Ex. 跟我來来=follow me 跟他走=follow him 吃chī =eat 飯饭fàn = cooked rice 吃飯饭is applied to all 3 meals a day. Ex. 吃早飯饭=eat breakfast 吃中飯饭=eat lunch 吃晚飯饭=eat dinner 怎麼么=How to… Ex. 怎麼么去／走=How do you get to…? 你怎麼么知道=How do you know? 怎麼么樣样zĕn me yàng = How is/about … To ask someone’s opinion:魚鱼怎麼么樣样= How is the fish? 吃西餐怎麼么樣样=how about eating western food? 免付小費费 miăn fù xiăo fèi = no tips required In China, you rarely see people tipping anywhere, since it is not a part of Chinese culture. 免miăn=no need or exempt It is sometimes exchangeable with 不用. Ex. 免付小費费 =不用付小費费. 的de used as an assertive expression:好的,是的,真的(When真的is used in a question, it is as “ really”, or “Is it true?”.

You know their food is very fresh, especially seafood. “See you at 6:00pm Saturday.” you say to each other. (In the Buffet Restaurant) W: waiter/waitress Y: you The W greets and leads you to the seat. (2 people) Today is a holiday that has especially a lot of people. “We usually have many customers too, because our vegetable and fruit are very fresh.” You know it because you come with friends often. The W asks you if you want iced tea or Chinese hot tea? You ask for iced water for both of you, and Chinese hot tea for you. The W tells you that the soy sauce, pepper and salt are all on the table. You tell your friend that their food is good and price is inexpensive. $8.95 lunch, $17.50 dinner per person without tips. “Enjoy your meal.” W says.
