5 Recruiter: IT, Internet are where jobs are
Demand for talent in the information technology and Internet industries rose in the third quarter of the year, while the need in real estate-related industries weakened, Zhaopin.com, China's largest recruiting website, reported on Thursday.  Demand in the IT and Internet sector led the third quarter's human resource market with a year-on-year growth of 40 percent, according to Zhaopin.com's report.  The biggest news in September was the initial public offering of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Zhaopin.com said in its report. Other Internet giants as well as smaller players are also investing in human resources, an example being Baidu Inc's recent hire of Zhang Yaqin, a former top Microsoft executive, as the president for new business.

9 1. The Introduction of Russell Baker
Russell Baker is the 1979 Pulitzer Prize winner for Distinguished Commentary and a columnist for The New York Times. When Baker was only five, his father died. His mother, a strong-willed woman with three children, was determined her children would succeed.

10 1. The Introduction of Russell Baker
Russell Baker did everything from delivering papers to hustling subscriptions for the Saturday Evening Post. As is often the case, early hardships made the man. Text A is taken from the author’s autobiography “Growing Up” (1982),which won him another Pulitzer prize. This book traces his youth in the mountains of rural Virginia.

11 2. Cultural Background a. Grade schools in the U.S.: U.S. students generally go through elementary school (Kindergarten to 5th or 6th grade.), middle school (grades 6-8 ) or junior high schools ( grades 7-9), and high schools (grades 9-12 or 10-12). “the third year in high school” (Para 1) equals “the eleventh grade” (Para 9).

12 2. Cultural Background b. Spaghetti: Spaghetti is the Italian-style thin noodle, cooked by boiling and served with sauce. Usually you would put a fork into a plate of spaghetti, turn the fork several times so that spaghetti will wind around the fork, then place the fork into your mouth. It’s impolite to suck. Other Italian noodles (macaroni)

14 2. Cultural Background c. The proper way of eating spaghetti: Hold the fork in your hand as if to poke the spaghetti. Scoop up a small amount of spaghetti on your fork and raise it about 30cm above your plate. Make sure the spaghetti on your fork is completely disconnected from the remainder on your plate.

15 2. Cultural Background c. The proper way of eating spaghetti: 4. Put the prongs of the fork at an edge of the plate that is free of food. 5. Quickly point the prongs of the fork straight down toward the plate and place the points on the plate. 6. Twirl the fork to gather the spaghetti around the prongs.

16 2. Cultural Background c. The proper way of eating spaghetti: 7. With a quick scooping movement, gather up the roll around the prongs and place it in your mouth. 8. Gently gather up any stray spaghetti ends that don’t make it all the way into your mouth.
