British Meals The first meal of the day in the morning is breakfast (usually eaten between about 7:30 and 9:00). Many British people eat toast土司 with butter or margarine人造黄油 and jam果酱, marmalade桔子酱 or Marmite (a dark brown spread made from yeast酵母). Melon香瓜, grapefruit葡萄柚 or fruit cocktail什锦水果 are popular. Others eat a bowl of cereal麦片粥; for example, cornflakes玉米片 or muesli燕麦片 with milk, or porridge.
A traditional English breakfast (also known as a cooked breakfast or a fry-up) is a cooked meal which may contain food such as sausages腊肠, bacon, kippers腌鱼, black pudding, scrambled or fried or poached egg, mushrooms, fried tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns土豆煎饼 and toast. People sometimes eat a boiled egg, dipping strips of toast into the egg yolk蛋黄. A continental breakfast欧式早餐 is a small meal and is not cooked; for example, a bread roll面包卷 or croissant羊角面包 with cheese or ham and a cup of coffee. The most common drinks at this time of day are orange juice or a cup of breakfast tea.
Bangers (sausages) and mash Many people have a tea-break at about 11:00 in the morning (elevenses上午茶). If a meal is eaten in the late morning instead of both breakfast and lunch, it is called brunch早午餐. Lunch is the meal eaten in the middle of the day (usually between about 12:30 and 2:00). Many people eat a sandwich. Some people have a simple meal such as cheese and biscuits or soup and bread. A ploughman‘s lunch农夫午餐 is a traditional lunch for farmers: a bread roll面包卷, Cheddar cheese车达奶酪, Branston pickle and salad, perhaps with a pork pie. Roast beef, roast potatoes, green beans and gravy A Sunday roast is a traditional meal eaten by a family at Sunday lunchtime; for example, roast beef with roast potatoes, parsnips, peas, Brussels sprouts, green beans, Yorkshire pudding约克郡布丁, bread sauce and gravy. Mint sauce薄荷酱 or redcurrant jelly is often eaten with lamb, apple sauce with pork, and horseradish sauce 辣根酱(a type of mustard芥末) with beef, cranberry sauce with turkey. Fruit crumble and custard Tea-time is a small meal eaten in the late afternoon (usually between about 3:30 and 5:00). People may drink tea, and often eat biscuits (American English: cookies), cakes or savoury foods such as sandwiches, crumpets松脆饼 or tea-cakes. Occasionally people may have a full afternoon tea or a cream tea: this includes a scone with jam and cream as well as a selection of sandwiches and cakes. High tea is a light meal eaten in the early evening (for example, 6 o‘clock) served with a pot of tea; this is popular in north England and Scotland. Supper is the most common name for the meal eaten in the evening (usually between 7:00 and 8:30). 英国的饮食 英国人的饮食习惯可谓独树一帜。早晨起床前要喝一杯较浓的红茶,俗称:“被窝茶“。早餐以熏咸肉、烩水果、麦片、咖啡、鸡蛋、面包等为主;午饭较为简单,有时只吃三明治;晚饭则比较讲究,习惯吃些烤鸭、烤羊腿、牛排等菜肴与口味比较甜的点心。 英国人在菜肴的烹调上也很有特色,用油较少,清淡,调料很少用酒。调味品如盐、醋、胡椒粉、色拉油、各种酸果等,都放在餐桌上由客人自己选用。烹调方式上以清煮为主,蒸、炸、烩为辅。稍加分析就不难看出,英国人的饮食理念虽利弊兼有,但利多于弊,比如爱饮茶、饮食清淡以及清煮的烹调方式等值得国人借鉴。
英式菜也是世界公认的名流大菜,它历史悠久、工艺考究,很得世人青睐。与此相关,英国人在用餐上也是很讲究的。一般的英国家庭一天通常是四餐:早餐、午餐、午茶点和晚餐。有极个别地区的人还要在晚上九点钟以后再加一餐。英国人讲究口味清淡,菜肴要求质好量精,花样多变,注意营养成分。他们喜欢吃牛肉、羊肉、蛋类、禽类、甜点、水果等食品。夏天喜欢吃各种水果冻、冰淇淋,冬天喜欢吃各种热布丁。进餐时一般先喝啤酒,还喜欢喝威士忌等烈性酒。
早餐 传统的英式早餐有煎培根、香肠和煎土司。这叫做“煎食”。但现在多数人都很忙,没办法每天都吃这种丰盛的早餐,所以现在英国最流行的早餐种类有: 一碗玉米片加牛奶; 一些优格加新鲜水果; 土司涂果酱,通常在早餐时喝茶、咖啡、或果汁。 英国人仍在周未享用传统的英式早餐。各个旅馆或饭店,尤其是大家所熟知的家庭式旅馆(B&B's)皆有供应传统的英式早餐。
午餐 英国人的午餐很快就解决,不像意大利人,通常午餐需要三十到四十分钟,许多英国人午餐只吃三明治,或许是因为三明治是英国发明的。通常是早上在家做好三明治,然后在午餐时间食用,三明治是英国人的便当。同样受欢迎的午餐为烤马铃薯。
晚餐 晚餐是一天中的主餐,且通常有两道菜--肉或鱼加蔬菜,之后有甜点(也就是布丁)。英国小孩都知道在吃布丁前要把肉和蔬菜吃光光。 冷冻熟食在英国相当普遍,几乎每个家庭都有微波炉,且通常英国人(尤其是学生会买一份冷冻熟食,放进微波炉,边看电视边吃--这叫做吃“电视晚餐”。)国外食物也相当受英国欢迎。超市里摆满了琳琅满目的印式、中式、意式、希腊式和日式食物——事实上是来自世界各地的食品。晚餐后通常要来上一杯茶(当然要加牛奶!)。
