Rivers, mountains, forest and sea - these are the unbeatable ingredients of New Zealand’s bush walks. www.purenz.com

Untouched and untainted, walkers can immerse themselves in an adventure that is 100% Pure New Zealand. Image: Abel Tasman National Park www.purenz.com

New Zealand is blessed with more than 8,000 kilometres/ 5,000 miles of walkways and tracks. It’s the perfect way to escape and revive. Walks range from short walks to scenic lookouts to multiple day walks for experienced hikers. No matter what your age or fitness, it’s easy to enjoy New Zealand’s exquisite and unspoilt environment. Peak season for walks is November to April although some of the tracks can be walked year round. www.purenz.com

Department of Conservation www.doc.govt.nz The Department of Conservation, or DOC, is the central government agency that is charged with conserving the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand. It’s mission is ‘to conserve New Zealand’s natural and historic heritage for all to enjoy now and in the future’ Their website can help guide you through the National Parks and Walkways that fall under their jurisdiction. Image: Whirinaki Forest www.purenz.com

To help walkers select their track, DOC offer the following guidelines. A “Path” - well formed with easy grades. Suitable for people of all ages, fitness levels, abilities and experience. Constructed to allow for wheelchair access or to "walking shoe" standard. Walking Track - defined and well formed. Suitable for people of most ages, fitness levels, abilities and experience. Constructed to "walking shoe" standard. Tramping Track - limited formation often with steep grades, with the trail generally marked. Suitable for moderately fit, experienced and properly equipped people, wearing tramping boots. Route - lightly cut through bush and scrub; may include tramping tracks no longer maintained. Above the bushline, generally (but not always) marked with poles or cairns. Riverbed routes are generally unmarked but a symbol on the map will indicate the best route in normal river conditions. Suitable for fit, well equipped people with a high degree of experience, and with navigating and river crossing abilities. Image: Bushwalk – Abel Tasman National Park www.purenz.com

It is important that walkers stick to the tracks that are well signposted. Not only does this lessen the damage done to plant life, but also lessens the chances of becoming lost in the bush! New Zealand’s weather changes rapidly and sometimes without warning. Before you even think about taking off along a walking track, check the forecast. Make sure that you wear appropriate clothing and boots and take a change of clothes (wool or specialist outdoor fabrics) and adequate food and emergency supplies. Letting someone know where you are heading to and when you expect to get back can help if you get into trouble. Throughout the walking tracks in New Zealand there is a vast network of Huts. Within these huts there are log books. Signing them can help rangers to see where you have been and when you walked through that particular section of the track. www.purenz.com

New Zealand has 14 National Parks – a third of New Zealand is protected in parks and reserves. From mangrove-fringed tidal inlets of Northland to the snow-capped volcanoes of the central plateau, from the forests of the Te Urewera to the majestic fiords, glaciers and mountains of the south, New Zealand’s diversity of landscape is special. But most of all New Zealand’s National Parks offer the chance to enjoy an unspoiled primeval landscape, where humans have had only minimal impact. Many tracks have basic hiking accommodation provided on them – known locally as ‘DOC Huts.’ They vary from 2 to more than 40 beds. Depending on the popularity of the track, they may need to be booked in advance via DOC’s website and incur a modest fee of 12-20 NZ$. Designated campsites are usually available also. Huts have been classified into 4 categories depending on the facilities provided. Category One – Great Walk huts have bunks or sleeping platforms with mattresses, water supply, toilet, hand washing facilities and heating with fuel available. They may have cooking facilities and fuel and a warden. Category Two – Intermediate – Have bunks or sleeping platforms with mattresses, water supply, toilet and hand washing facilities. They may have cooking and heating facilities and often a warden Category Three – Basic – Have bunks or sleeping platforms, toilet and water supply. Category Four – Shelters and Bivouacs – Huts with limited facilities which do not meet category three criteria Image: Bark Bay Hut in the Abel Tasman National Park. www.purenz.com
