North China University of Technology Luo Xueke Hierarchical Teaching Mode ——an effective way to adjust to the rapid development of higher education in China North China University of Technology Luo Xueke

I. Problems and Countermeasures Problems(elite higher education to popularized higher education) Higher education stepping into the stage of popularization development, the achievement gap between students is widened. To take the major of Mechanical Design and Automation for example, the extreme score gap of the 2002 examinees is 247.

I. Problems and Countermeasures At that time, it became our urgent need to address the issue of how to teach according to the students’ abilities and guide the students of different performance to succeed.

With such a big gap, if the method of hierarchical teaching is not taken, it will result in the situation that the students will lose the curiosity, willingness and even confidence to learn. For the teachers, it is impossible to choose the appropriate method to be fit for all the students.

How to do (1)To set training objectives After four years of study: About 20% students can go on with a further study as postgraduates, students to pursue a second degree, or international students etc. About 40% students are to be senior engineers and technicians. About 40% students are to be the industrial field application engineers with some specific skill.

(2)To adopt a new teaching mode ——the hierarchical teaching of basic courses According to the performance difference, the mode of hierarchical teaching is taken in public basic courses and some core professional and technical basic courses, including college English, advanced mathematics, college physics, circuit analysis, mechanics courses and so forth.

II. Supporting Measures The requirement of students with different performance is the driving source of this training program. The optimization of the curriculum system ensures the basic and necessary professional knowledge and skills. Teaching information platform provides the technical support for the implementation of the training program. The intelligent and careful guidance of the class instructors, counselors, educational administrators and the credit system make the program feasible.

III. Application and Effect 1. The practice of hierarchical teaching mode in the Department of Mechanical Design and Automation (from 2002 to 2006) 1) A high rate of study as postgraduates (higher than 20% annually) 3) With the training for various vocational skill qualifying examinations, the students find ideal jobs. Those who are not good at theories are trained to get some skill to be employed successfully. 2) Thanks to the complete curriculum system and practice system, the goal to train senior engineers and technicians is ensured and the students are trained to possess innovation consciousness and practical ability.

Around 80 students pass the CNC operation skill examination.

More than 200 students have obtained Pro/E qualification certificate.

More than 60 students obtained apprentice engineer qualification certificate, SOLIDWORDS certificate and ANSYS certificate.

During 2005~2008, the graduates with the vocational qualification certificate are employed by such famous companies as SMC and Foxconn and by some mold manufacturers as field service engineers.

4) In the recent four years(2005—2008), the employment rate has been above 96%. 96.29﹪ 2006 98.05﹪ 2007 97.16﹪ 2008 98.38﹪

III. Application and Effect 2. the popularization of the training mode of hierarchical teaching in other majors The Multi-level hierarchcal training mode has achieved remarkable result in the major of Mechanical Design and Automation. At present, this mode has been popularized to other majors. Since 2007, this mode has been adopted in the training program of all the science and engineering majors.

IV. Experiences to share 1. The teaching mode is effective. The multi-level hierarchical teaching mode is in accordance with present situation of students and the overall demand of higher education popularization. It is an effective way to teach according to the students’ abilities and improve the quality of personnel training comprehensively. It conforms to the present situation of student source, to the social demand of personnel at different levels and to the training orientation of our university.
