I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

The first stanza I wandered lonely as a cloud, That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

I wandered lonely as a cloud simile/reverse personification It conveys to us his lonely and melancholy mood with the image of “cloud”.

Beside the lake, beneath the trees alliteration It strengthens the connection between the two places, and makes the whole line more compact by repeating the sound.

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze personification It sees the changes of the poet’s mood from loneliness to exhilaration.

The second stanza Continuous as the stars that shine , And twinkle on the milky way, 像群星在闪烁一片晶莹, They stretched in never-ending line, Along the margin of a bay: 通往远方仿佛无穷无尽: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

Continuous as the stars that shine simile/comparison It amplifies the visual effect to evoke our sense of “daffodils” with the image of “stars” twinkling on the milky way.

They stretched in never-ending line exaggeration/hyperbole The poet uses “never-ending line ” to go further to impress us with the image of countless daffodils.

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance personification It makes the whole sentence more expressively. It conveys the uncontrolled passion of the author at that moment.

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought The third stanza The waves beside them danced; but they 粼粼湖波也在近旁欢跳, Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: 却不如这水仙舞得轻俏: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: 又怎能不感到欣喜雀跃: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: 这景象所给我的精神之宝。

The waves beside them danced personification It shows us the poet’s cheerful mood at that time. It reveals the poet’s deep love toward nature.

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought punctuation: dash 破折号 The poet is intoxicated and cannot help lingering his eyes on the beautiful daffodils, pondering over the true meaning of these daffodils to himself. These two actions, gaze and ponder, both continuous and time-consuming, so the employment of the dashes is just the proper way to achieve this effect.

The fourth stanza For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude, And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

Main idea of stanza four Not until the poet later meditates on what he saw does he fully appreciate the cheerful sight of the dancing daffodils.(beauty of nature)

Express the poet’s emotion: Summary Describe the scenery: stanza one: Daffodils fluttered and danced. stanza two: There were countless daffodils. stanza three: The waves danced together. Express the poet’s emotion: stanza four: The poet looks forward to the rural life.
