The five mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics are Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, and Nini. They represent the 5 Olympic rings. When their names are put together, the phrase “Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni” is formed, which means “Beijing welcomes you.” Each mascot represents an animal: Beibei is the fish(鱼), Jingjing is the panda(熊猫), Yingying is the Tibetian Antelope (羚羊), and Nini is the swallow(燕子), Huanhuan represents the Olympic torch(火炬). The mascots also represent the landscapes of China: water(水), forest(木), fire(火), Earth(土), and sky(天).
