Facing Down a Giant 1 Samuel 17

1 Samuel 17:1-11 (NIV)  Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Sokoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Sokoh and Azekah. 2 Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. 3 The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them. 4 A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; 6 on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. 7 His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield bearer went ahead of him.

1 Samuel 17:1-11 (NIV) 8 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.

The Giant Height Armor and Weapons Shield Verbal Threat

1 Samuel 17:8 8 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. 8 歌 利 亞 對 著 以 色 列 的 軍 隊 站 立 ， 呼 叫 說 ： 你 們 出 來 擺 列 隊 伍 做 甚 麼 呢 ？ 我 不 是 非 利 士 人 麼 ？ 你 們 不 是 掃 羅 的 僕 人 麼 ？ 可 以 從 你 們 中 間 揀 選 一 人 ， 使 他 下 到 我 這 裡 來 。

Saul was chosen by the people 1 Samuel 8:18 - 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.” 那 時 你 們 必 因 所 選 的 王 哀 求 耶 和 華 ， 耶 和 華 卻 不 應 允 你 們 。 1 Samuel 12:13 - 13 Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. 現 在 ， 你 們 所 求 所 選 的 王 在 這 裡 。 看 哪 ， 耶 和 華 已 經 為 你 們 立 王 了 。

Saul was Israel’s goliath 1 Samuel 10:23 - 23 They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others. 眾 人 就 跑 去 從 那 裡 領 出 他 來 。 他 站 在 百 姓 中 間 ， 身 體 比 眾 民 高 過 一 頭 。 1 Samuel 9:2 - 2 Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else. 他 有 一 個 兒 子 ， 名 叫 掃 羅 ， 又 健 壯 、 又 俊 美 ， 在 以 色 列 人 中 沒 有 一 個 能 比 他 的 ； 身 體 比 眾 民 高 過 一 頭 。

1 Samuel 16:13-14 (NIV) So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah 14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him. 13 撒 母 耳 就 用 角 裡 的 膏 油 ， 在 他 諸 兄 中 膏 了 他 。 從 這 日 起 ， 耶 和 華 的 靈 就 大 大 感 動 大 衛 。 撒 母 耳 起 身 回 拉 瑪 去 了 。 14 耶 和 華 的 靈 離 開 掃 羅 ， 有 惡 魔 從 耶 和 華 那 裡 來 擾 亂 他 。

1 Samuel 17:30-40 (NIV) 30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before. 31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him. 32 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” 33 Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”

1 Samuel 17:30-40 (NIV) 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”

1 Samuel 17:30-40 (NIV) 38 Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

1 Samuel 17:30-40 (NIV) 30 大 衛 就 離 開 他 轉 向 別 人 ， 照 先 前 的 話 而 問 ； 百 姓 仍 照 先 前 的 話 回 答 他 。 31 有 人 聽 見 大 衛 所 說 的 話 ， 就 告 訴 了 掃 羅 ； 掃 羅 便 打 發 人 叫 他 來 。 32 大 衛 對 掃 羅 說 ： 人 都 不 必 因 那 非 利 士 人 膽 怯 。 你 的 僕 人 要 去 與 那 非 利 士 人 戰 鬥 。 33 掃 羅 對 大 衛 說 ： 你 不 能 去 與 那 非 利 士 人 戰 鬥 ； 因 為 你 年 紀 太 輕 ， 他 自 幼 就 作 戰 士 。 34 大 衛 對 掃 羅 說 ： 你 僕 人 為 父 親 放 羊 ， 有 時 來 了 獅 子 ， 有 時 來 了 熊 ， 從 群 中 啣 一 隻 羊 羔 去 。

1 Samuel 17:30-40 (NIV) 35 我 就 追 趕 他 ， 擊 打 他 ， 將 羊 羔 從 他 口 中 救 出 來 。 他 起 來 要 害 我 ， 我 就 揪 著 他 的 鬍 子 ， 將 他 打 死 。 36 你 僕 人 曾 打 死 獅 子 和 熊 ， 這 未 受 割 禮 的 非 利 士 人 向 永 生 神 的 軍 隊 罵 陣 ， 也 必 像 獅 子 和 熊 一 般 。 37 大 衛 又 說 ： 耶 和 華 救 我 脫 離 獅 子 和 熊 的 爪 ， 也 必 救 我 脫 離 這 非 利 士 人 的 手 。 掃 羅 對 大 衛 說 ： 你 可 以 去 罷 ！ 耶 和 華 必 與 你 同 在 。 38 掃 羅 就 把 自 己 的 戰 衣 給 大 衛 穿 上 ， 將 銅 盔 給 他 戴 上 ， 又 給 他 穿 上 鎧 甲 。

1 Samuel 17:30-40 (NIV) 39 大 衛 把 刀 跨 在 戰 衣 外 ， 試 試 能 走 不 能 走 ； 因 為 素 來 沒 有 穿 慣 ， 就 對 掃 羅 說 ： 我 穿 戴 這 些 不 能 走 ， 因 為 素 來 沒 有 穿 慣 。 於 是 摘 脫 了 。 40 他 手 中 拿 杖 ， 又 在 溪 中 挑 選 了 五 塊 光 滑 石 子 ， 放 在 袋 裡 ， 就 是 牧 人 帶 的 囊 裡 ； 手 中 拿 著 甩 石 的 機 弦 ， 就 去 迎 那 非 利 士 人 。

David’s Confidence 1 Samuel 17:37a “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” 大 衛 又 說 ： 耶 和 華 救 我 脫 離 獅 子 和 熊 的 爪 ， 也 必 救 我 脫 離 這 非 利 士 人 的 手 。
