1 常用字 遊戲 Sing the songs Say the chants
Explain the rationale for singing songs and saying chants ( helps students to develop intonation, word recognition and word memory. It is a multi-sensory approach and it helps to consolidate the learning)

2 什麼是常用字? What are High Frequency Words (HFW)?
在六十萬英字中,我們常用的只是少數 ; 統計資料顯示 其中十三個字已佔日常讀物的四分之一, 一百個常用字已佔一般讀物的八成。 要刻意學習常用字的原因: 提升閱讀能力不可或缺的一環, 部分常用字不依從拼音規則 (例如 to, are, I, two ), 某些單子如果不用於句子中不能帶意義 High frequency words make up about 80% of English text They are learnt through ‘looking and saying’ because generally they are not phonemic, i.e. phonics cannot be used to decode them Students need to see HFW regularly so they can learn them If students can learn HFW alongside phonics they will become more fluent readers quickly

3 遊戲一 怪獸快來了! 用具: 白紙 筆一支 常用生字表 (參考用) 玩法: 家長先選一個 常用字。
在紙上畫線,每一字母一條線, 如:this,__ __ __ __。 孩子每次可說一個字母 (如:a )。由於 this 是沒有a ,所以要在紙上畫出 ‘怪獸’ 的其中一條線, 學生錯七次便輸 (因‘怪獸’由七筆組成)。 This game introduces the students to fun ways to learn HFW How to play the game (Hangman) Parent chooses a word from the HFW list for P1 The parent draws a number of dashes to represent the letters in the word, e.g. this _ _ _ _ The child tries to work out the word by guessing the letters Each correct letter is recorded For each correct guess a part of the ‘monster’ is drawn, e.g. mouth The child tries to guess the word before the ‘monster’ is drawn

This game introduces the students to fun ways to learn HFW How to play the game Place the cards face up on the table Take turns to call out a card Participants try to pick up the card as it’s read The winner keeps the card (Start with a few cards that the child definitely knows then slowly introduce new cards)

5 遊戲三 跳拍說 玩法: 把常用字掛在高處, 家長叫出一字,子女拍打並說出該字。 用具: 常用字字卡
This game introduces the students to fun ways to learn HFW How to play the game Write the words on post-it notes Place the post-it notes around the room at a height that causes the child to jump to reach them Parents read the word and the child ‘jumps’ and hit the word Or the child can read and the parent ‘jumps’ If the word is read correctly the child can stick the post-it on themself

6 遊戲四 潛烏龜 玩法: 常用字字卡中抽出一張(稱為 ‘烏龜卡),並收妥, 平均分配餘下的字卡, 各人先抽出相同的字卡, 輪流抽對方的卡,
用具: 常用字字卡二或四套 玩法: 常用字字卡中抽出一張(稱為 ‘烏龜卡),並收妥, 平均分配餘下的字卡, 各人先抽出相同的字卡, 輪流抽對方的卡, 最快打出手上字卡者勝。 This game introduces the students to fun ways to learn HFW How to play the game Take one card from the pack Deal the remaining cards evenly between the participants Participants sort their cards into matching pairs Take turns to read the pairs of cards out loud and place the pairs in the centre When all the pairs have been read and placed in the centre participants take turns to take a card from the player on their left (the participant with the least cards starts) The winner is the player who gets rid of all their cards first

7 遊戲五 (一)配對 用具: 常用字字卡二套 玩法: 將兩套常用字字卡反轉放在枱上。 子女每次反兩張。 如果相同,可保留這兩張字咭。
另一個 like 字在哪兒? 玩法: 將兩套常用字字卡反轉放在枱上。 子女每次反兩張。 如果相同,可保留這兩張字咭。 若不相同,要反轉放回原處。 得最多字卡者勝。 This is played the same way as Pelmanism

8 遊戲五 (二)米糊 用具: 常用字字卡二至四套 玩法: 把字咭反轉放在枱上圍成一圈, 家長與子女輪流抽出一張咭,放在中間,
如抽出的字咭與中間的咭相同,便可保留那兩張咭, 得最多字卡者勝。 This is pelmanism in a circle!

9 遊戲六 什麼不見了? 用具: 常用字字卡一套 玩法: 將常用字字卡放在枱上, 請孩子合上眼其間家長抽去一張字卡,
請小朋友打開眼睛猜哪個字不見了。 How to play the game Display the word cards Participants read the words Participants cover their eyes an a card is removed Participants guess the missing card If they guess correctly they keep the card

10 遊戲七 猜猜說 用具: 常用字字卡一套 玩法: 把其中一個常用字貼在子女的背上,
子女最多可問三個問題,如:有幾多個英文字母組成該字 (How many letters are there?) 。 How to play the game Place a card on the back of the participant The participant tries to identify the card by asking questions such as, How many letters are there?, What letter does it begin with? If the participant guesses correctly they keep the card

已填字或空白‘賓果’ 紙 常用字字卡 is a in on am the this six I 玩法: 孩子自隨意在格內寫上九個常用字或預先製作 ‘賓果’紙 (可有數款) , 由家長抽出常用字,如在格內有此字,子女圈出這個字, 如圈出的字母能成一常用字(不論橫向或直向), 便叫Bingo。 How to play the game Each participant has a board Participants take turns to read a word from their board If the participants have the word they circle it The first participant to circle a number of words in a line is the winner

12 遊戲九 找找看 用具: 填字表 常用字字卡 筆 玩法: 家長畫出一表,在表上填滿字母,包括有常用字, 子女需圈出所有的常用字 (可限時)。

13 遊戲十 擲飛鏢 玩法: 用具: 鏢板 球 顏色盒 常用字字卡一至兩套 子女把球擲向鏢板,
如球落在紅色區域上,便要從紅色的盒子抽出一個常用字,並讀出該字。 How to play the game Write some high frequency words on post-its Display on a board/wall Participants throw a paper ball or bean bag at the word If they hit the word , they read it and score a point The winner is the participant with the most points after a predetermined number of throws

14 遊戲十一 保齡球 玩法: 用具: 玩具保齡球瓶或膠樽 6-9 個 常用字卡一套 球 在玩具保齡球瓶上貼上常用字, 子女滾出‘保齡球’ ,
每擊中的保齡球得一分,能讀出常用字得兩分。 How to play the game Using elastic bands attach the high frequency words to plastic bottles Set the bottles up as in a bowling alley Use a ball to try to knock down the “pins” The participants read the words on the “pins” that have been knocked down A point is scored for each word correctly read Repeat

子女用這些英文字母來砌出常用字。 How to play the game Each participant has a set of vowel cards Place an number of consonant cards on the table Participants draw five cards from the centre and they try to make words using the letter cards Score a point for each word Replace the consonant cards back in the centre Next player takes a turn Repeat

17 遊戲十三 釣魚樂 玩法: 用具: 常用字魚卡 (加萬字夾) 魚竿 (木筷子,繩及磁石) 能用磁石釣起寫有常用字的小魚,可得一分;
能說出該字,可得兩分。 How to play the game Make a fishing rod using a disposable chopstick and a magnet for each participant Attach a paperclip to each high frequency word card (cards can be cut into fish shapes if you wish) Then ‘go fishing’ If the card is correctly read the participant keeps the ‘fish’ Winner is the player with the most ‘fish’

18 遊戲十四 常用字康樂棋 用具: 常用字棋盤 棋子 骰子 玩法: 在棋盤的空格內填上常用字, 輪流投擲骰子來決定每人的棋子每次向前多少步,
若擲到常用字,孩子需讀出格內的字, 如擲中'Go back two steps' 即退兩步;'Go ahead two steps' 即前進兩步, 最快到達終點者勝 。 Play the board game

19 如何支援孩子準備默書 串字六部曲: Look (看), Say (說), Spell (串), Cover (蓋), Write (寫) and Check (查)
用具: 常見字字卡 白紙 筆一支 玩法: 請小朋友細心看看一常見字, 如this。 先家長拼讀,小朋友跟讀 th-i-s或由孩子自行拼讀, 用手或筆串寫 t-h-i-s 字, 遮蓋該字, 默寫, 與孩子一同檢視答案 。 Explain and demonstrate to the parents how this strategy is done Tell parents this strategy will assist students with spelling, writing and dictation. Parents could encourage their child to use this method to learn the words for dictation
