FUN FACTS Ali became a boxer because his bike was stolen. When the 12-year-old Ali’s beloved bicycle was stolen in 1954, he reported the theft to a police officer and vowed to punch (拳打) the thief. The police officer, who was also a boxing trainer, suggested that the upset teenager first learn how to fight and took him under his wing. Ali was also a singer and an actor. In 1963, Ali released an album, I Am the Greatest. The album included a cover (翻唱版本) of Ben E. King’s famous song “Stand by Me” and it was sung all by himself. As an actor, Ali starred in Buck White, a popular Broadway musical. Ali was scared of flying. The story took place ahead of 1960 Rome Olympics when Ali flew to Europe. Elizabeth was there before the Beatles, there as the nation coped with postwar recession (衰退期), there during what she called the “annus horribilis (多灾多难的一年),” when the nation appeared threatened as three of her four children became separated or divorced in 1992. If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. 13

14 Question for further discussion:
Here are three of Muhammad Ali’s best-known quotes. Which one do you like best? Why? I hated every minute of training, but I said, “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” To be a great champion, you must believe you are the best. If you’re not, pretend you are. Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them—a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill and the will, but the will must be stronger than the skill. 14
