7 Packing Requirement 35 Dear Sirs, S/C No. AQP-1033
We acknowledge receipt of your letter dated January 13 enclosing the captioned S/C in duplicate. But we wish to state that after going through the clauses of the S/C, we find that the packing clause is not clear enough. In order to eliminate possible future trouble, we would like to make clear beforehand. Our packing requirements are as follows: All the apricot kernels are wrapped in plastic bags and packed in cans, the lids of which are sealed with adhesive tape. Twelve cans are packed in a wooden case, which is nailed, and secured by overall metal strapping. We have made a footnote on the contract to that effect and are returning herein one copy of the contract after duly countersigning it. But we believe that wooden case is not suitable because it’s too heavy. We believe waterproof carton is a better choice because cartons are comparatively light and compact. 38 Modifying Terms of Packing Dear Sirs, We are writing to you in regard to the packing of the cargo of chinaware, which we feel necessary to clarify for our future dealings. As chinaware is fragile, we would like hard foamed plastic padding for each and wooden cases outside. In addition, please remember to stencil warning markings such as “FRAGILE”, “HANDLE WITH CARE” on the wooden cases. We hope pay special attention to the packing. Please let us know whether these requirements could be met.

Road Freight

18 Ocean Carriage It is the most widely used mode of transportation in international trade. It has the attraction of being a cheap mode of transportation for delivering large quantities of goods over long distances. However, it is slow, vulnerable to bad weather and less punctual if compared with road or air transport.

19 Road Transport The road freight and rail freight are commonly used in the cross-border deliveries. About 50% to 80% of cross-border deliveries are completed using road freight. Generally, a transit distance within 1,000 kilometers using road freight is competitive compared to rail and air freight.

20 Rail Transport Rail transport is a major mode of transport in terms of capacity, only second to ocean transport. It is capable of achieving relatively high speed and is most economical.

21 Air Transport Most air cargoes are carried on passenger airliner. About 80% to 90% of air cargoes are transported by IATA (国际航空运输协会 ) members. (IATA) Air freight is often used for high value but low volume cargo.

22 Air freighters like the Boeing F can carry loads weighing up to metric tons. The air container permits cargo transport linking air, land and ocean freight without intermediate reloading.

39 Shipping Instructions Dear Sirs, Re: Canvas Folding Chairs With reference to our S/C No. DW1102 for 5000 pieces of the captioned goods, we are glad to advise you that an irrevocable L/C in your favor has been opened yesterday. We have booked shipping space on M.V. “Browick”, which is due to sail from London to Shanghai around the end of this month. Please get the goods ready for shipment at an early date and make your efforts to ship them by that vessel without any delay. We would like to remind you that the goods must be packed in cartons of one dozen each. At the same time, please make sure that the shipping marks indicated in our contract are to be printed on the cartons. We hope that the above shipping instructions are clear enough. Thank you for your cooperation.

40 Asking for Transshipment and Partial Shipment Dear Mr. Steve, We have received your letter of April 15 requesting us to ship all the 5000 sets of chinaware in one lot. On receiving your letter, we immediately contact the shipping agent. Unfortunately we are told there is no enough space for your order during early in May. It was clearly stated in the S/C that shipment would be effected on May 20. If you desire earlier delivery, we can only make a partial shipment of 2000 sets on May 11 and the remaining 3000 sets on May 20. We hope this arrangement will be agreeable to you. Should this be so, please amend the covering L/C to allow partial shipment. Kindly let us know your opinion as soon as possible so that we can request the manufacturers to expedite delivery.

31 Language Points partial shipment
When shipments are made on different dates and/or different ports or points of origin, but the transport documents indicate the same destination and bear the same means of conveyance for the same journey, they are not regarded as covering partial shipments.

32 Non-Partial Shipment The route of vessel S/S HERMANA voyage No. 8 is from Port A to Port B (both in the seller's country) and then to Port C (in the buyer's country). The transit time between Port A and Port B is 2 days.
