10 About The Necklace The Necklace was written by Guy de Maupassant (莫泊桑 ), a well-known French novelist and short-story writer. He wrote in the tradition of the 19th century French realism. Most of his works were about everyday life of the simple humble people. His best known works is The Diamond Necklace.

11 Pierre Loisel used to work in a government office
Pierre Loisel used to work in a government office. One day he and his wife received an invitation to a palace ball. Mathilde spent 400 francs on a new dress but had no money for jewellery. She borrowed a beautiful necklace from her friend Jeanne. The couple had a very good time in the palace. But after the ball Mathilde found the necklace missing. They borrowed money to buy a diamond necklace for Jeanne. The necklace that looked exactly like Jeanne’s cost them 36,000 francs. After they returned the necklace, they had to work day and night for ten years to pay back the money they had borrowed. When Mathilde met Jeanne again, she had changed so much that her friend couldn't recognize her. She did not know until then that the necklace she borrowed was not made of diamonds. It was worth 500 francs at the most. The Story

It seems like today is going to be just another normal day, …看来今天似乎像另外一个正常的日子一样，句中的like不是动词或介词，而是一个连词。like作连词用时有以下两种意思。 1) 表示“像……那样”。例如： I hope I can drive a car like you do. 我希望我开车开得像你一样好。 It is hot like it is in midsummer. 天热得像在大伏天一样。 2) 表示“好像，仿佛”，相当天as if。例如： He acts like he owns that place. 他很霸道，就好像那地方都是她的。 It seems like he has known the answer. 他似乎好像知道了答案。

20 6. would rather 1) 后面跟不带to的动词不定式，表示“宁愿做……，宁可……”。其否定式是在rather后面加上not。例如： It’s cold outside, so I’d rather stay at home. 外面很冷，因此我宁愿呆在家里。 Would you rather stay here or go home? 你宁愿呆在这里还是回家 2) 表示“宁愿……不愿……”，可与than 连用。例如： He would rather watch TV at home than go to the cinema. 他宁愿在家看电视而不愿去看电影。 3) 在would rather 前后可用不同的主语来表示“某人宁愿让另一个人做某事”。在这种情况下，一般用过去时来表示现在或将来要做的事。谈到过去发生的动作，要用过去完成时。例如： I’d rather you went home now. 我宁愿让你现在就回家。 I’d rather you hadn’t done that.我真希望你没有做过那件事。 He’d rather you came on Friday. 他比较希望你星期五来。
