As fair thou art, my bonie lass,
A Red,Red Rose O my luve is like a red, red rose, That‘s newly sprung in June; O my luve is like the melodie That's sweetly played in tune. As fair thou art, my bonie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a' the seas gang dry. Till a‘ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; And I will luve thee still , my dear, While the sands o' life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only luve, And fare thee weel a while; And I will come again, my luve, Tho'it wre ten thousand mile! (Robert Burns)

Romanticism(or the Romantic era/Period)was an artistic , literary , and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to Partly a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, (1)it was also a revolt against aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment and a reaction against the scientific Rationalization of nature
6
(2)it was embodied most strongly in the visual arts ,music ,and literature , but had a major impact on historiography, (3)Education (4)and the natural sciences. (5)its effect on politics was considerable and complex ; while for much of the peak Romantic period it was associated with liberalism and radicalism , in the long term its effect on the growth of nationalism was probably more significant.
7
Theme: The speaker loves the young lady beyond measure . The only way he can express his love for her is through vivid similes and hyperbolic comparisons.
8
Key features Style: Romantic Genre : a ballad民谣 Structure:4 quatrains

Features Musicality(音乐性)
It maintained the natural, smooth of a ballad , it can read or chant Iambic Vital English words Scottish dialect

1. O my luve is like a red, red rose That‘s newly sprung in June;
Sincere(情感真挚性) Used a lot of simile O my luve is like a red, red rose That‘s newly sprung in June; the image of his love is beautiful, pure and full of vitality O my luve is like the melodie That's sweetly played in tune. Give the readers some imagine, you can imagine that his love danced with much grace through the melodie
11
Till a‘ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
It is an old simile ,but poet uses unvarnished words in the whole poem and put the love in the background of human existence ,it sublimes(升华) the poem , it shows his love is sincere
12
Surface-structure Deviation
1. Apocope-the omission of a final part of a word e.g. Till a‘ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; And I will luve thee still , my dear, While the sands o' life shall run. …… Tho'it wre ten thousand mile! Analysis: here,Burns has used a’ for ‘all’, wi’ for ‘with’, O’ for ‘of’ and tho’ for ‘though’.
13
Surface-structure Deviation
Usage of old English e.g. ①thou=you(主格,“你”,相当于中文古字“君”或“卿”) ②thee=you(宾格,“你”,亦相当于中文古字“君”或“卿”),③fare thee well=farewell to you=say good-bye to you(“再见”) Usage of dialect e.g. ① luve=love(“爱人”,“爱”) ②melodie=melody(“乐曲”) ③gane=gone(“逝去”) ④ware=were(are过去式,“是”)
14
Deep-structure Deviation
Overstatement e.g.
15
Analysis It is quite obvious that all the sea will never become dry and the rocks will unlikely melt with the sun. However, we can notice that the speaker here is expressing a genuinely felt emotion. What he tries to say to his beloved is that he will forever love her. The hyperbolic expressions here strongly emphasize the promise of undying love.
16
Rhyme In each stanza, the second and forth lines end with masculine rhyme(阳韵) Rhyme also occurs in a repeated word at the end of the first and third lines of the third and forth stanza.
17
Metre(韵律) Iambic tetrameter(四步抑扬格)in line 1&3 e.g.
Till a‘ the seas gang dry, my dear, And I will luve thee still , my dear, And fare thee weel, my only luve, And I will come again, my luve,
18
Metre Iambic trimeter (三音步抑扬格) in line 2&4 e.g.
That‘s newly sprung in June; That's sweetly played in tune. So deep in luve am I; Till a' the seas gang dry. And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; While the sands o' life shall run. And fare thee weel a while; Tho'it wre ten thousand mile!
