4 BBC News Australia has always suffered from bouts of extreme hot weather but the number and intensity of heat waves is on the rise, prompting a rethink of how the country lives, works and plays in the sun. Some like it hot, but the 13-day stretch with temperatures exceeding 40C in Longreach that ended last week was some of the hottest weather in living memory for the Queensland town. It was also a new heat wave record for the cattle country town, beating the previous record by four days, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

7 BBC News One person has died and at least 52 are missing after a South Korean fishing boat sank off Russia's far eastern peninsula, officials say. The trawler became stranded in the Bering Sea at around 05:20 GMT, the South Korean government said. The 60-strong crew comprised 35 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos, 11 South Koreans and a Russian inspector. Russian media said seven people had been saved, but weather and water conditions were hampering the search. Greenwich mean time
