Members of a society may be from different ethnic groups. 5 Nathan Bedford Forrest and Ku Klux Klan (三K党)
Forrest’s mother tells him she names him after Civil War hero Nathan Bedford Forrest who was a lieutenant general in the Confederate Army (南北战争时期的南部联军) during the American Civil War, and the founder of Ku Klux Klan. Ku Klux Klan The Ku Klux Klan is a club formed in Tennessee around The Klan was strongly against the idea of blacks gaining any rights following the Civil War and would often use violence as a mean of exercising their white superiority (奉行白人至上主义).

Running plays a very important role in Forrest’s life. He even gets into college by running fast in the football team of the university. During his university days he experienced an important political event. Governor George Wallace blocked the school house door at the University of Alabama, 1963, in a symbolic threat to block two black students from enrolling at the school. President Kennedy ordered secretary of defense to use military force. The university finally cancelled the racial segregation. Blacks or African American rather than coon, raccoon, nigger, negro (insulting words)

12 John F. Kennedy ( ) John F. Kennedy is the 35th President of the United States, serving from 1961 until his assassination in He is the youngest elected to the office at the age of 43. Kenney is also the only president to have won a Pulitzer Prize. His Inaugural Address offered the memorial saying: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” One of the four Civil-rights heroes: Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy (J.F. Kennedy’s brother, “Being brother is too difficulty ”, as Forrest says.) . Something in common for the four: Assassinated, died young, fighting for human rights.

13 The Vietnam War ( ) The Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in U. S. history. The hostilities in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia claimed the lives of more than 58,000. Another 304,000 were wounded. It involves the North Vietnamese and the National Liberation Front (民族解放阵线) in conflict with United States forces and the South Vietnamese army.

14 The Antiwar Movement (1969)
In the battlefield of Vietnam, Forrest was wounded when saving his officer Lt. Dan Taylor, who lost both of his legs, and Forrest’s best friend in the army Bubba was killed. The bloody war had a strong impact on everyone. Opposition to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War began slowly and in small numbers in 1964 on various college campuses in the United States. Public polls showed a majority of Americans were opposed to the war and wanted it to end. Jenny stayed with the members of the Black Panther Party(黑豹党) and took part in an anti-war rally.

After returning from the Vietnam War, Forrest experienced a lot of important historic events. Moon landing — Armstrong American astronaut Neil Armstrong lands on the lunar surface for the first time in human history. Neil Armstrong was a mission commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission on July 20, 1969, leaving behind famous words “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.

The Ping-Pong Diplomacy Forrest was so good at playing ping-pong that he became a member of the All-American Ping-Pong Team(全美乒乓球队) and visited China with the team. (fictitious) On April 10, 1971, nine players, four officials, and two spouses stepped across a bridge from Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland, opened an era of “the Ping-Pong” diplomacy. Premier Zhou En-lai remarked: “Never before in history has a sport been used so effectively as a tool of international diplomacy.”

The Beatles — John Lennon Forrest was then interviewed on a TV program together with a famous British singer John Lennon (约翰·列侬). The Watergate scandal was a political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s as a result of the June 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement. The scandal eventually led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, the President of the United States, on August 9, 1974, the only resignation of a U.S. President. The scandal also resulted in the indictment (起诉) , trial, conviction (有罪判决) and incarceration (监禁) of 43 people, including dozens of top Nixon administration officials.

20 Running and the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan
The attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan occurred on Monday, March 30, 1981, 69 days into his presidency. While leaving a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., President Reagan and three others were shot and wounded by John Hinckley, Jr. Reagan suffered a punctured (穿孔)lung and heavy internal bleeding, but prompt medical attention allowed him to recover quickly. Nobody was killed in the attack, though Press Secretary(白宫新闻发言人) James Brady was left paralyzed(瘫痪) and permanently disabled. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity (精神失常而罪名不成立) and remains confined to a psychiatric facility (被送往精神病医院治疗).
