The Greek Alphabet and Pronunciation
History of the Pronunciation of Greek A gradual growth in the teaching of Greek in the 14th and 15th centuries after the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. ι, η, υ, ει, οι, were all pronounced as ‘ι’ Antonio of Lebrixa (1503) argued that η is a long vowel corresponding ε to as ω does to ο, and that ζ is pronounced σδ. The tradition of writing accents appears to have started at Alexandria around 200BC and is generally credited to Aristophanes of Byzantium. Initially its use seems to have been intermittent and mainly to clarify ambiguities. However, those who do not wish to master the expertise of accentuation surely need feel no shame. It did not exist at high period of Attic literature.
