Until Maori arrived from Polynesia 1,200 years ago, New Zealand had been left, alone in its vast ocean, to evolve untouched for an amazing 60 million years. Its plants and animals, originally from the great southern continent of Gondwanaland, evolved in isolation. Like the Tuatara, pictured here, the closest living relative of the dinosaurs.
