Our world – not as it is, but what it could be… Throughout this presentation, we will be reviewing the mission of The Rotary Foundation, its programs, and how you can help. We titled our presentation Our world – not as it is, but what it could be, because we feel it best depicts the driving force behind each Rotarian’s pursuit to make a difference. In addition to an overview of The Foundation’s programs, you’ll learn about all the resources that are available to Rotarians.

RIDN Jackson RI D3520

The Rotary Foundation’s mission is the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national, and international humanitarian, educational and cultural programs. (Speaker’s note: read slide) We implement our mission through programs in three key areas:

Humanitarian Grants

Volunteer Service Grants The Humanitarian Grants Program of The Rotary Foundation provides grants to Rotary clubs and districts to implement humanitarian projects. There are several grant types that address different service needs and funding options. Matching Grants support humanitarian projects that benefit a community in need and have direct local and international Rotarian involvement. Contributions are matched by The Rotary Foundation. District Simplified Grants (DSGs) are a tool for Rotary districts to support short-term, humanitarian projects that benefit our local or international communities as determined by the clubs of the district. Health, Hunger, and Humanity (3H Grants) are awarded to fund long-term, sustainable and grassroots development projects that are too large for one club or district to implement on their own. Volunteer Service Grants support travel of qualified Rotarians to provide international humanitarian service. [CONTENT CHANGE: Speaker’s Notes discussing picture are CUT] [內容變更:演講人請注意:討論所使用的照片已刪除] Discussion (optional) 討論(選擇性) Can you give an example of a Humanitarian Grant project in which your club participated?

Educational Programs

Rotary Centers [SPEAKERS NOTE CHANGES ARE BOLD AND UNDERLINED] [演講人注意:大寫及畫底線部份已更改] The Ambassadorial Scholarships Program has funded more than 47,000 men and women from 110 nations to study abroad since 1947. We are one of the world's largest privately funded international scholarship programs. 731 scholarships were awarded for study in 2005-06 representing 60 countries. Group Study Exchange is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. Teams exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution allows for up to 70 fellows to study at one of the six Rotary Centers worldwide. The selected Rotary World Peace Fellows gain a master's degree in conflict resolution, peace studies, and international relations. [CONTENT CHANGE: Speaker’s Notes discussing picture are CUT] [內容更改:演講人請注意:討論所使用的照片已刪除] (Speaker’s note: optional) (演講人請注意:選擇性) You can find more information regarding these programs and other Educational Programs on the Educational Programs Web pages on the Rotary Web site. Or Talk about a GSE team or recent scholar sponsored by the club.

Polio Plus For a generation now, Rotary has been in the forefront of the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. We received some great news in February 2006. The number of countries with indigenous polio has dropped to an all-time low of four – Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Health officials point to monovalent vaccines as the key to this recent success. Monovalent vaccines attack a single virus strain. This is the first time in three years that the number of polio endemic countries has dropped. PolioPlus Partners is a Rotary Foundation program by which Rotarians may voluntarily assist with keeping Rotarians informed of progress, promoting media coverage, volunteering in National Immunization Days (NIDs) and providing needed resources in regions with, or at risk, for polio.

Two Needs, Two Ways Contributions from individual Rotarians around the world support Foundation projects. Two Needs, Two Ways of Giving expresses the need to support the Foundation programs today and in the future: the Annual Programs Fund for support today and the Permanent Fund to save for the future. Two Needs, Two Ways表現出我們必須支持在今天以及未來基金會計畫。

Annual Programs Fund (APF) The Annual Programs Fund addresses the need to support the day-to-day functioning of the wide range of educational and humanitarian programs. What does Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) mean? Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY)是什麼意思? It means encouraging all of our members to get involved in an club or district project. It means supporting The Rotary Foundation with a minimum $100 contribution to the Annual Programs Fund…every year. It means you becoming a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. It means our collective commitment to help make our world better. As a reminder, all contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are eligible for Paul Harris Fellow recognition.

We spend just a portion of our money on. . . Each Year in the United States… We spend just a portion of our money on. . . Legal gambling                   $550   Billion Each year in the U.S. we spend billions of dollars on snacks, candy, ice cream, fast food and other not-so-essential items. $100 from Every Rotarian, Every Year could change the world. According to UNICEF and the World Bank, it would take about $28 billion a year to end malnutrition, immunize all the children against preventable diseases, and end illiteracy across the globe. Does $100 from Every Rotarian, Every Year sound like a realistic goal? Last year, The Rotary Foundation spent over US$91 million on programs – a tremendous year of helping those in need – but that’s only a fraction of what we all spend on burgers and fries! 去年是幫助那些有需求的人極重要的一年-但那只是我們所有花在漢堡及薯條的錢的一小部份﹗ (Speaker’s note: transition to the next slide saying the following) (演講人請注意:換到下一張投影片時唸出下面文字) How can we easily spend our money in the right place? Goal setting!

Set goal higher than previous year 請每個社員支持 Ask every member for support Goal setting is the key to assisting Rotary clubs measure progress in reaching The Rotary Foundation’s overall fundraising goals. Each club is asked to support their president and president-elect in setting and reaching fundraising goals. This will ensure that sufficient funds are available for both our district projects and TRF’s international projects. Does $100 from Every Rotarian, Every Year seem easy to achieve, or daunting? Think back to our last slide… we spend $18 billion just on snacks!

Gives districts & clubs a fast start in annual fundraising efforts Average Gift: $336!!! One way to achieve your club’s fundraising goals is through TRF-DIRECT. Can someone explain what TRF-DIRECT is? TRF-DIRECT? TRF-DIRECT, currently available in the US and Canada, enables Rotarians to automatically transfer funds from their checking/cheque accounts, savings account or credit card to The Rotary Foundation. Convenient and cost-effective, the program allows donors to direct predetermined amounts to the Annual Programs Fund on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. By the way, the average TRF-DIRECT annual contribution in North America is $336! Many of our new Paul Harris Society Members – those that choose to give a minimum $1,000 per year to The Rotary Foundation – enjoy the convenience of TRF-DIRECT. And, it’ll make your club treasurer’s life easier! 而且,它可以使貴社財務的日子好過些﹗ Are you aware of a Paul Harris Society in your district? How is it being promoted in your district and in your club? Is anyone in this group already a member?

The check will be made out to "The Rotary Club" and can be used for any club activity including supporting TRF. The cardholder receives a no-fee card and earns one Worldpoint for each dollar spent. Worldpoints can be redeemed for airline tickets (one US domestic ticket for 25,000 points) 1% cash back or merchandise. TRF receives a portion of the purchase price for every purchase made. The royalty on the non-Worldpoints card is 0.50 of 1 % for the Worldpoints accounts, it is lower.

Life Income Agreements While contributions to the Annual Programs Fund provide the necessary funding to operate TRF’s current programs, gifts to the Permanent Fund ensure TRF’s ability to address the world’s greatest needs for generations to come. How does the Permanent Fund differ from the Annual Programs Fund? Gifts to the Permanent Fund are held in perpetuity as part of an endowment. These gifts are professionally invested and only a portion of the Permanent Fund earnings are spent each year on programs. A Bequest is created when someone includes The Rotary Foundation in their will or estate plan. A Benefactor is an individual or couple that has made a provision in their estate plan to gift a minimum $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. A Bequest Society member is an individual or couple that has made a provision in their estate plan to gift a minimum $10,000 to The Rotary Foundation. An Endowment can be created to support a specific program, and requires a gift of at least $25,000. A Life Income Agreement enables donors to receive income for life from their charitable gift. -比爾‧蓋茲 “Back when Rotary became involved with polio, most people thought volunteer organizations were about tackling projects down the street or across town – not across the world. Rotary changed all that, and in the process, you reminded us that there is no human problem so daunting that it can’t be overcome by people.” - Bill Gates, Sr. I want close with a quote from Bill Gates, Sr. who oversees the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Sometimes it’s good for all of us to be reminded just how special Rotary is. (read quote aloud.)
