Du Fu, his travels, and “thatched cottage” in Chengdu

     大 德 中﹐揚 州 富 人 吳 防 禦 居 春 風 樓 側﹐與 宦 族 崔 君 為 鄰﹐交 契 甚 厚。崔  有 子 曰 興 哥﹐防 禦 有 女 曰 興 娘﹐俱 在 襁 褓。崔 君 因 求 女 為 興 哥 婦﹐防 禦 許  之﹐以 金 鳳 釵 一 只 為 約。既 而 崔 君 遊 宦 遠 方﹐凡 一 十 五 載﹐并 無 一 字 相 聞。 女 處 閨 闈﹐年 十 九 矣。其 母 謂 防 禦 曰﹕「崔 家 郎 君 一 去 十 五 載﹐不 通 音 耗﹐ 興 娘 長 成 矣﹐不 可 執 守 前 言﹐令 其 挫失 時 節 也。」防 禦 曰﹕「無 已 許 吾 故  人 矣﹐況 成 約 已 定﹐吾 豈 食 言 者 也。」女 亦 望 生 不 至﹐因 而 感 疾 沉 綿 枕 席﹐ 半 歲 而 終。父 母  哭 之 慟。臨 歛﹐母 持 金 鳳 釵 撫 屍 而 泣 曰﹕「此 汝 夫 家 物 也﹐ During the Dade reign period [1297-1308], there lived in Yangchow a rich man by the name of Wu who was a district defense commandant. He lived next to the "Loft of Vernal Breezes", and was a neighbor of Master Cui, an official with whom he had a deep bond of friendship. Cui had a son named Xingge and Wu had a daughter called Xingniang, both of whom were still in their infancy. Cui sought the girl as a future wife for his son and when Wu gave his consent Cui presented him with a golden phoenix hairpin as a pledge. Shortly thereafter Cui was transferred to post in a distant region, and for fifteen years not a word was exchanged between the two families. In this time the girl reached her nineteenth year in the seclusion of her chambers. Her mother said to Wu, "The young master of the Cui family has been gone now for fifteen years with no news at all, and Xingniang has fully matured. I don't believe that we should hold to the previous accord and waste her youth." Answered Wu, "But I've given my word to my friend; the covenant has already been made. How can I go back on it?" The girl likewise yearned for the arrival of her betrothed, became sick, and was confined to bed. Within half a year she died. Her parents wept in grief.
