Peking opera is a purely Chinese opera form which dates back to the year 1790. That year four local opera troupes of Anhui Province came to Beijing on a performance tour on the order of the imperial court. The tour was a hit and the troupes stayed. The artists absorbed the tunes of the Hubei local opera and drew on the best of Kun Qu, Qin Qiang and Bang Zi and other local operas.

"piao you“—Fans’ organization "piao you" means Peking opera fans. There is no lacking of social celebrities among Peking opera fans. Emperor Guang Xu of Qing Dynasty, for example, was not only a good amateur Peking opera singer, but was also a good drummer in the Peking opera orchestra (the drummer plays the role of the director of the orchestra). The Empress Dowager was an avid Peking opera fan, too. The huge three-storey theater in the Summer Palace is a proof of her love for Peking opera.

京 劇 是 地 地 道 道 的 中 國 國 粹 ， 因 形 成 于 北 京 而 得 名 ， 但 它 的 源 頭 還 要 追 溯 到 几种 古 老 的 地 方 戲 劇 。 1790 年 ， 安 徽 的 四 大 地 方 戲 班 ─ ─ 三 慶 班 、 四 喜 班 、 春 公 班 和春 班 ─ ─ 先 后 進 京 獻 藝 ， 獲 得 空 前 成 功 。 微 班 常 与 來 自 湖 北 的 漢 調 藝 人 合 作 演 出 ，于 是 ， 一 种 以 微 調 “ 二 簧 ” 和 漢 調 “ 西 皮 ” 為 主 、 兼 收 昆 曲 、 秦 腔 、 梆 子 等 地 方 戲精 華 的 新 劇 种 誕 生 了 ， 這 就 是 京 劇 。 在 200 年 的 發 展 歷 程 中 ， 京 劇 在 唱 詞 、 念 白 及字 韻 上 越 來 越 北 京 化 ， 使 用 的 二 胡 、 京 胡 等 樂 器 ， 也 融 合 了 多 個 民 族 的 發 明 ， 終 于成 為 一 种 成 熟 的 藝 術 。 將 京 劇 稱 作 “ 東 方 歌 劇 ” 是 因 為 兩 個 劇 种 都 是 集 歌 唱 、 舞 蹈 、 音 樂 、 美 術 、 文學 等 于 一 体 的 特 殊 戲 劇 形 式 ， 在 形 式 上 极 為 類 似 ； 同 時 ， 在 各 自 不 同 的 文 化 背 景 中， 它 們 都 獲 得 了 經 典 性 地 位 。 在 人 的 臉 上 涂 上 某 种 顏 色 以 象 征 這 個 人 的 性 格 和 品 質 、 角 色 和 命 運 、 是 京 劇 的一 大 特 點 ， 也 是 理 解 劇 情 的 關 鍵 。 簡 單 地 講 ， 紅 臉 含 有 褒 義 ， 代 表 忠 勇 者 ； 黑 臉 為中 性 ， 代 表 猛 智 者 ； 藍 臉 和 綠 臉 也 為 中 性 ， 代 表 草 莽 英 雄 ； 黃 臉 和 白 臉 含 貶 義 ， 代表 凶 詐 者 ； 金 臉 和 銀 臉 是 神 秘 ， 代 表 神 妖 。

象征性格和命運的臉譜除 顏 色 之 外 ， 臉 譜 的 勾 畫 形 式 也 具 有 類 似 的 象 征 意 義 。 例 如 象 生 凶 毒 的 粉 臉 ，有 滿 臉 都 白 的 粉 臉 ， 有 只 涂 鼻 梁 眼 窩 的 粉 臉 ， 面 積 的 大 小 和 部 位 的 不 同 ， 標 志 著 陰險 狡 詐 的 程 度 不 同 ， 一 般 說 來 ， 面 積 越 大 就 越 狠 毒 。 總 之 ， 顏 色 代 表 性 格 ， 而 不同 的 勾 畫 法 則 表 示 性 格 的 程 度 。 臉 譜 起 源 于 上 古 時 期 的 宗 教 和 舞 蹈 面 具 ， 今 天 許 多 中 國 地 方 戲 中 都 保 留 了 這 种傳 統 。

生、旦、淨、丑生 、 旦 、 淨 、 丑 ” 是 什 么 ？ 其 實 不 過 是 角 色 分 類 。 “ 生 ” 是 男 性 正 面 角 色 ， “ 旦 ” 是 女 性 正 面 角 色 ， “ 淨 ” 是 性 格 鮮 明 的 男 性 配 角 ， “ 丑 ” 是 幽 默 滑 稽 或 反 面角 色 。 每 种 角 色 又 有 表 明 身 份 的 臉 譜 、 扮 相 等 ， 只 要 演 員 一 上 場 ， 你 一 望 便 知 。 在 “ 京 劇 ” 的 “ 票 友 ” 中 有 許 多 大 名 鼎 鼎 的 人 物 ， 其 中 包 括 清 朝 的 光 緒 皇 帝 載恬 ， 他 不 但 會 唱 戲 ， 還 能 司 鼓 ， 并 且 是 京 、 昆 、 腔 的 多 面 能 手 。 著 名 的 慈 禧 太 后 則是 一 個 大 戲 迷 ， 在 今 日 頤 和 園 內 還 保 留 一 座 中 國 最 大 的 戲 樓 ， 該 戲 樓 高 21 米 ， 共 有三 層 ， 可 見 她 在 京 劇 上 花 了 不 少 的 功 夫 。
