What inspired you to do that at such a young age? 6.Fraser: I was inspired to start making jam by my grandmother. The neighbours soon started buying my homemade jam, and then I began selling it at farmers’ markets and to small shops. 7.Question: Were you exposed to entrepreneurship as a child? Did you have any family members who influenced you in that way? _________________________________________

I kept the eggs warm on top of the telly, and amazingly they hatched. I sold the chickens to the neighbours and that was my first ever little business. 9.Question: On those impossible days of starting up, what motivated you to keep going? 10.Fraser: I was motivated by a feeling that I was doing something worthwhile with my life and by the fact that I was enjoying what I was doing every step of the way. ______________________________________________ ___ _____________________________________ ________________________ _________________________________________________ ________________________________________

In your opinion, what’s most important for a successful designer: talent, dedication, creativity, or other factors? 1. Yes, I do. I think successful people actively look for opportunities and they enthusiastically and methodically work for their goals. 2. I think creativity is the most important. All designs begin with a creative mind which brings raw materials into mature products. But to be a successful designer, creativity alone is not enough. It also needs a combination of talent, dedication, skill, experience, and other factors. Passage B – Four phases of design thinking

Passage B Four phases of design thinking 1.Are there any ingrained habits that are linked to a designer’s ability to turn original ideas into innovations? Having studied more than 100 top designers in various fields over the past couple of years, I found that there are a few shared habits which seem to be almost second nature to many designers. And these ingrained habits are intrinsically linked to the designer’s ability to bring original ideas into the world as successful innovations. So what can people in business learn from studying the ways successful designers solve problems and innovate? On the most basic level, they can learn to question, care, connect, and commit—four of the most important things successful designers do to achieve significant breakthroughs. _______________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________ ____________ _______________________________________________ _________________________________________________ ______________________________________________

Passage B 2. Question. If you spend any time around designers, you quickly discover this about them: They ask, and raise, a lot of questions. Often this is the starting point in the design process, and it can have a profound influence on everything that follows. Many of the designers I studied, from Bruce Mau to Richard Saul Wurman to Paula Scher, talked about the importance of asking questions, even the “stupid questions”—the ones that challenge existing realities and assumptions in a given industry or sector. The persistent tendency of designers to do this is captured in the joke designers tell about themselves: How many designers does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: Does it have to be a light bulb? 3. In a business setting, asking basic “why” questions can make ___________________ ___________________________________________________ _____________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ __________________________________________

Passage B the questioner seem naive while putting others on the defensive (as in, “What do you mean by ‘Why are we doing it this way?’ We’ve been doing it this way for 22 years!”). But by encouraging people to step back and reconsider old problems or established practices, the designer can reframe the challenge at hand—which can then guide thinking in new directions. For businesses in today’s fast-changing marketplace, the ability to question and rethink basic fundamentals—What business are we really in? What do today’s consumers actually need or expect from us?—has never been more important. 4. Care. It’s easy for companies to say they care about customer needs. But to really empathize, you have to be willing to do what many of the best designers do: Step out of the corporate ___________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ________ ____________________________________________ ________________________________________________

Passage B bubble and actually immerse yourself in the daily lives of people you’re trying to serve. What impressed me about design researchers such as Jane Fulton Suri of IDEO was the dedication to really observing and paying close attention to people—because this is usually the best way to find out their deep, unexpressed needs. 5. Connect. Designers, I discovered, have a knack for synthesizing—for taking existing elements or ideas and blending them together in fresh new ways. This can be a valuable shortcut to innovation because it means you don’t necessarily have to invent from scratch. By coming up with “smart recombinations” (a term coined by the designer John Thackara), Nike smartly combined a running shoe with an iPod __________________________________ _____________________________________________ ___________________________________

Passage B to produce its groundbreaking Nike + line, which enables users to program their runs. It isn’t easy to come up with these great combinations. Designers know that you must “think laterally”—searching far and wide for ideas—and must also be willing to try connecting ideas that might not seem to go together. This is a way of thinking that can also be embraced by non-designers. 6. Commit. It’s one thing to dream up original ideas. But designers quickly take those ideas beyond imagination by giving form to them. Whether it’s a napkin sketch or a digital mock-up, the quick and rough models that designers constantly create are a critical component of innovation— because when you give form to an idea, you begin to make it
90
Passage B real. 7. It’s true that when you put an idea into the world while it’s still young and imperfect, you increase the possibility of short term failure, but designers tend to be much more comfortable with this risk than most of us. They know that innovation often involves a repeated process with setbacks along the way and those small failures are actually useful because they show the designers what works and what needs fixing. The designers’ ability to “fail forward” is a particularly valuable quality in times of dynamic change. Today, many companies find themselves operating in a test-and-learn business environment, which is just one more reason to pay attention to the people who’ve been conducting their work this way all along. _______________________ ___________________________________________________ ____________________________________________ _________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ _______________________

Sample 齐头式 Dear Lin: It feels like such a long time since I wrote you last time. How are you getting along? So far my summer vacation has been great! I spent most of my weekends on the beach. I drove an ice cream truck around and sold ice cream to kids. It is a combination of the two things I love most—ice cream and kids. The pay isn’t too good, but I love the job very much. When I was free, I also played beach volleyball with friends. And I have learned surfing these days. It’s so cool. Now I am getting a nice tan, and you can no longer say I am paler than you. I hope the summer has been going well for you, too. Please tell me how you spend your summer vacation in Beijing. With best wishes, Jenny

Chanel started her career by making hats, and then gradually built up an empire of fashion. Famous for quilted ( 绗 缝的 ) black chain bags, little black dresses, and that iconic double C logo, the brand Chanel she established is one of the most well-known and instantly recognizable brands in the world. Culture express - Chanel comfort over the constraints of the then popular fashion. She helped women say good-bye to the days of corsets ( 紧身胸衣 ) and other confining garments. The following year she created the “little black dress,” which changed the fashion world forever. Not only was black altered from being seen only as a color of mourning, but a new concept of having a central black piece that can be worn on many occasions was introduced and it still has an influence today. Chanel set the stage for modern fashion by creating a signature style and a brand awareness. And she also played a huge role in designing the modern woman: independent, fashionable, intelligent, and unique.
