He spent very little time at school, perhaps no more than a year in all. 他在学校读书的时间很短,可能总共还不到一年。 1) no more than (only) 仅仅,不过。例如:He had walked no more than two miles when he felt tired again. 他走不过二英里就又累了。 not more than≠no more than意为“不比……多”,“不超过”,只有比较的意思, 没有仅仅的意思。例如: There were not more than 20/2000 people in the hall. 大厅里人数不超过20/2000。(只表达实际情况,数量可能多也可能少)。 There were no more than 20 people and the hall was almost empty. 大厅里只有20人, 几乎是空的。(不仅表达数目,还有仅仅的意思。) 2) in all (altogether) 总共。例如: He has collected 2000 stamps in all. 他总共收集了2千张邮票。 There are thirty six classes in all in our school. 我们学校总计有36个班。
