1 I really appreciate Lincoln’s letter to his son’s teacher. Among his words of wisdom, I especially agree with his ideas that his son should be taught “to have faith in his own ideas, even when everyone tells him they are wrong” and “not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on the bandwagon.” It is true that we often tend to give in to pressure from others and even give up our dreams sometimes, but Lincoln, the man who fought for the unity of the United States, emphasized the need for both hope and courage in life, and I think this can help us to achieve great things.
2 (1) Yes, I would mind. I don’t want to attract extra attention from my teachers. If my parents were to share their own teaching philosophy with my teachers, I think my teachers would be offended, thinking my parents are giving them a lecture on how to be a good educator. I would then be watched carefully in class to see if I practice what my parents were preaching, so my freedom at school would be doomed. So I would definitely not want my parents to share their philosophy of education with my teachers, by phone, e-mail, or any other means.
2 (2) No, I wouldn’t mind. To share ideas and be open- minded can make one a better educator. I believe my parents would only contact my teachers with the best intentions, and my teachers would understand this. Also, by hearing what my parents think, my teachers would learn about me, too, which might lead to better relationships between me and the teachers. Besides, if my parents regularly kept in touch with my teachers, I would behave myself in class for sure.
3 (1) After careful discussion, our team has reached an agreement that the three most important qualities needed to live a happy life are appreciation, compassion, and responsibility. A person who has these three qualities will be grateful for the good things that he or she is given, sympathy for others, and a sense of duty toward others.
3 (2) After careful discussion, we concluded that creativity, diligence and resilience are three qualities that lead a person to a happy life. Through hard work and creativity, he does things differently and is able to make new things, which makes his life more interesting. When he falls, he will stand up right away and keep walking. He won’t sink into the mud of frustration. With these qualities, he is sure to lead a happy life.
3 (3) After careful discussion, we all agreed that compassion, reflection and balance are three qualities that a person needs if he wants to live a happy life. A compassionate person loves to help people, and through giving he feels content. And reflection will spur a person to be better than yesterday. He disciplines and takes care of his mind and heart. Balance is like a brake; it prevents a person from going to extremes. He will try to get his priorities right. A person with these three qualities leads a positive life and always makes progress.

Listening腳本-1 Good morning, class. Today we’ll talk about the life of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, into a poor family in Kentucky. That’s why we celebrate his birthday in February. He did not receive much formal education because he had to help his father on the farm. When he grew up, he left his parents and worked as a store clerk. He developed a good reputation as an honest and diligent man and a great speaker. His friend then encouraged him to become a lawyer. In the beginning, Lincoln had no confidence, but with determination and concentration, he studied law on his own and finally succeeded.
Listening腳本-2 At the age of twenty-three, in 1832, Lincoln began his political career because he wanted to set up a government that would serve the people. In 1834, when he was twenty-five, he was elected as a legislator. He was soon known as a capable and honest politician. Unfortunately, over the next ten years he had numerous political failures. However, he regarded failures as stepping stones along the path forward. Finally, in 1860, Lincoln’s years of hard work paid off when he was elected the sixteenth president of the United States, but it was not easy to be the president at this time because the South and North were fighting over slavery.
Listening腳本-3 The next year, the Civil War began. Lincoln bravely led the North, which was against slavery, in its fight against the South, which supported slavery. With the end of the Civil War in sight, Lincoln was reelected to the presidency in 1864. On April 9, 1865, the Civil War finally ended. However, five days later, tragedy struck. On April 14, Lincoln joyfully took his wife to see a lay at the Ford Theater in Washington, D.C. There he was assassinated by an actor, John Wilkes Booth, who was angry about Lincoln’s emancipation, or freeing, of the slaves.
