Internet即“因特网”，Internet本身起源于 1969年的一个广域网计划，当时美国国防部的高级研究计划署（ARPA）为了能使一些异地计算机相互共享数据，以利其开展研究工作，于是以一定的方式将这些计算机连接起来，这就形成了Internet的前身ARPANET。ARPANET网成功的主要原因是因为它使用了TCP/IP标准网络协议，TCP/IP网络协议是Internet采用的一种标准网络协议。1986年，美国国家科学基金会在政府的协助下，用TCP/IP协议建立了NSFNET网络，并与1989年该名为Internet向公众开放，从此，Internet便在全球各地迅速普及开来。1991年，很多商业机构开始把自己的局域网连接到Internet上，进一步扩大了Internet的应用范围。1993年9月15日，美国政府正式提出了“NII行动计划”，打算建设国家信息基础设施，这个文件在世界范围内引起了极大的震动，从某种意义上来讲，这是Internet发展的一个里程碑。1995年，原有的NSFNET正式宣布停运，取而代之的是一个有Sprint, MIC等电信公司分摊经营的Internet骨干网络，Internet从此正式对社会共总开放。目前，Internet拥有全球约3亿-5亿的拥护，而且这个数字还在以每月10%的速度增长。Internet连接着数万个计算机网络，平均每天还有数以亿计的人使用Internet，平均每天新增加数千家网站。人类正不可避免地进入一个网络社会。
