general description（总述） 1、a part of British Malaya 英国马来半岛的一部分 2、was ruled by the sultanate of johor. 由johor苏丹王国统治 3、Singapore has a diverse（多样的） populace of nearly 5 million people.In addition, 42% of its populace are foreigners.it is also the third most densely（稠密） populated in the world after macau and monaco（摩纳哥）

Languages（语言） Many Singaporeans, though not all, are bilingual. Most speak English and another language, most commonly Mandarin Chinese, Malay or Tamil. 许多新加坡人，虽然不是所有，都会两种以上语言。多数都是讲英语和另一种语言，普通话、马来语或者泰米尔语。

Festivals（节日） The major public holidays reflect the mentioned racial diversity, including Chinese New Year, Buddhist Vesak Day（佛教卫塞节）, Muslim Eid ul-Fitr , and Hindu Diwali（印度排灯节）. Christians constitute a large and rapidly growing minority, and Christmas Day, Good Friday, and New Year’s Day are also public holidays. On August 9,Singapore celebrates the anniversary of its independence with a series of events, including the National Day Parade（国庆节游行） which is the main ceremony（典礼、仪式）. The National Day Parade, 2005 was held at the Padang in the city centre.

Religion（宗教） More than 40% of the Singaporeans adhere to Buddhism（佛教）, the main faith of the Chinese population of Singapore. Other Chinese are followers of Taoism（道教）, Confucianism（儒教）, and Christianity（基督教）. Christians（基督教徒） constitute about 14% of the population of Singapore. Most Malays are Muslims（穆斯林）, who constitute about 15% of the population, while most Indians are Hindus（印度教徒）, constituting 7%. There is also a sizable number of Muslims and Sikhs（锡克教徒） in the Indian population.

Cuisine（烹饪文化） In Singapore‘s hawker（沿街小贩） centers, for example, traditionally Malay hawker stalls（货摊） selling halal food may serve halal versions of traditionally Tanil food. Chinese stalls may introduce Malay ingredients, cooking techniques or entire dishes into their range of catering. Singaporeans also enjoy a wide variety of seafood including crabs（螃蟹）, clams（蚌，蛤）, squid（乌贼）, and oysters（牡蛎）. One favorite dish is the stingray barbecued（ 烤黄貂鱼） and served on banana leaf and with sambal (辣椒酱).

cultural policy（文化政策） Singapore maintains tight restrictions on arts and cultural performances. Most artistic works have to be vetted（调查） by the government in advance, and topics that breach so-called out of bounds makers (OB makers) are not permitted.
